Tense Scenes As Jasmine Paolini Breaks Down in Tears During Brutal Stuttgart 1R Loss

As the No. 5 seed at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, the Italian was handed a seemingly manageable opener against qualifier Sönmez. With a significant edge in ranking and big-match experience, she was widely expected to progress comfortably.

However, it was Sönmez who seized control early, dictating play from the outset. The Turkish player broke the Italian in the opening and fifth games to race through the first set 6-2. Building on her dominance, Sönmez edged ahead 1-0 in the second set while Paolini continued to falter, trailing 40-30 in the next game. The frustration became visible as the Italian broke down in tears during the changeover after falling behind 5-2 in the second set.

It proved to be a disappointing outing for the 2024 French Open and Wimbledon finalist, as Sönmez remained firmly in control. After moving 2-0 ahead in the second set, the Turkish player broke again in the seventh game to extend her lead to 5-2 before sealing the set 6-2 and booking her place in the second round.

This victory stands out as the biggest of Sönmez’s career so far, making her one of the few Turkish players to defeat a Top 10 opponent in the WTA era. It further underlines her strong start to the season, which included a third-round showing at the Australian Open.

“First of all, it was a pleasure sharing the court with Jasmine; she’s a fantastic player and I really enjoy playing against her,” the Turkish player said after the match. She added, “This win is the biggest of my career, so I’m very happy. I felt great on the court; our training sessions went very well.”

Meanwhile, Paolini has struggled to meet her high standards this season. Her campaign began with a third-round exit at the Australian Open to Iva Jovic, and she has failed to build momentum since. Subsequent second-round defeats to Maria Sakkari in Qatar and Alexandra Eala at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships only added to her inconsistent run.

Paolini briefly rediscovered form with a semifinal finish at the Mérida Open in Akron, but the momentum quickly faded at the Sunshine Double. A fourth-round exit at Indian Wells was followed by a third-round loss in Miami, underlining her inconsistency.

The Stuttgart exit deepens Paolini’s struggles this season, handing her a seventh singles defeat of the year. With semifinal points to defend from last year, the early exit could prove costly, potentially seeing her slip from No. 7 to No. 9 based on the other results.
