Jannik Sinner Distracted by Heckling Fan During Tight Indian Wells Battle

As the second seed, Sinner commenced his Indian Wells Open by defeating Dalibor Svrcina in the round of 64 in straight sets. He continued his run by beating Canadian star Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.

In addition to his singles matches, Sinner competed in doubles with World No. 68 Reilly Opelka, but they were defeated in the round of 32 by Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in straight sets.

In the round of 16, the Italian star prepared to face the 19-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and eventually clinched the win with a concluding scoreline of 7-6(6), 7-6(4). Their intense battle also saw Sinner encounter disruptions late in the first set, as hecklers interrupted him, prompting chair umpire Greg Allensworth to ask, “Jannik, what’s going on?”

Although Sinner’s tense exchange remained inaudible, Allensworth later shared the words to the hecklers, after hearing the Italian’s side, “Yeah guys, please do not talk during the points. We would appreciate it. For now, Jannik, come on. If something else happens, please let me know.”

Another spectator, an aerial skier named Nick Novak, who was taking in the exchange between the elite star and hecklers, revealed through his X posts what was happening, adding, “I was STRESSED. Like he wouldn’t stop heckling and kept playing dumb being like, ‘what I’m just asking him questions! ‘”

He later shared, stressing the point that he was not one of the hecklers vexing Sinner, mentioning, “Public announcement, I was NOT heckling Sinner, it was the guy next to me. I promise! IM A SINNER! Let me SIN.”

Sinner, who faced Fonseca for the first time in his career, also expressed his thoughts after the win, highlighting the Brazilian’s impressive form, “Joao is an incredible player, incredible talent. Very powerful from both sides. He was serving very well. Maybe he dropped a bit at the end of the second set, but I’m very happy to get through.”

He continued, “I felt like trying to be as aggressive as possible was the key. I dropped a bit of intensity at the end of the second set, but he played incredible tennis out there, and the atmosphere has been amazing.”

In the quarterfinal round, the World No. 2 is all set to face rising American star Learner Tien, marking their career’s second meeting.
