French qualifier Térence Atmane is enjoying the best week of his tennis career so far at the Cincinnati Open 2025, having reached his first Masters 1000 semifinal. The 23-year-old has been in remarkable form, defeating two top-10 players to earn his place in the final four.
After his commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over world No. 9 Holger Rune, Atmane wrote something unexpected on the camera lens that got everyone buzzing.
Térence Atmane’s Mystery Behind “Fermi’s Paradox”
Following his quarterfinal win over Rune, Atmane grabbed a marker to sign the camera lens – a tennis tradition after big victories. The World No. 136 wrote: “Fermi’s Paradox?!”
When asked about his unusual choice during an interview with Tennis Channel, Atmane explained:
“I was sitting on my chair and they proposed me a pen to sign something and I was like, you know what, I’ve learned something last week about Fermi’s paradox. And I was like why not sharing with everybody?
“What I was learning about the universe and everything. And I was like, yeah it could be cool just to put this like that and just to see if people are going to search about the meaning of this. And if I can make some people research like smart things like this, about the universe, about the world that we’re living in. To me, it’s a bonus,” he added.
The Fermi Paradox, which is named after Nobel Prize-winning physicist Enrico Fermi, questions why humanity has not found any evidence of extraterrestrial life despite the existance of several stars and planets in the galaxy.
Atmane Will Clash With Jannik Sinner in 2025 Cincinnati Open SF
The Frenchman started his run by defeating Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. He then overcame 15th seed Flavio Cobolli in a thrilling three-set match, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5). Atmane continued his giant-killing spree by beating rising star João Fonseca 6-3, 6-4 before producing arguably the biggest upset of the tournament.
The 23-year-old’s victory came from the set down to beat fourth seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. This victory guaranteed his entry into the top 100 for the first time in his career. The 23-year-old then followed up with his dominant performance against Rune, becoming the first qualifier to reach the semifinals in Cincinnati since 2015.

The Frenchman now takes on World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, with the winner facing either Carlos Alcaraz or Taylor Fritz in the Cincinnati Open final.
