Jannik Sinner Shares Uplifting Message to Team Italy During Its Davis Cup Campaign

Sinner delivered an exceptional 2025 season, capping it by successfully defending his ATP Finals crown in Turin. However, he withdrew from the Davis Cup shortly ahead of the season-ending tournament, signaling his decision to close his year early and prioritize recovery before the 2026 campaign begins.

Questions swirled over the World No. 2’s absence from the national squad, yet Italy’s Davis Cup Finals campaign in Bologna faced no hurdles. The team, featuring Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Berrettini, and others, dominated their quarterfinal and semifinal clashes against Austria and Belgium, clinching wins without the ties even reaching a third rubber.

Now they were just one step away from achieving a rare three-peat in front of their home crowd. They faced team Spain in the final, their first in nearly six years. However, the scenario didn’t seem to change, as Berrettini started with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win over Pablo Carreno Busta, putting his country in a comfortable position.

Cobolli then sealed the triumph, overcoming Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, steering Italy to yet another coveted Davis Cup title. Once again, the tie was decided without even reaching a third rubber.

In the wake of Italy’s victory in Bologna, an important message from Sinner to captain Filippo Volandri has come to light.

“In the Davis chat that we have, Jannik congratulated us for the win. Every day, he wrote to me separately and told me ‘Act as you always do, keep the group united and trust the players,” Volandri said.

Notably, Italy claimed its fourth Davis Cup crown, becoming the first nation in 53 years to secure three consecutive titles since automatic qualification for defending champions was discontinued.

Italy triumphed despite missing not only Sinner but also another top-10 player, Lorenzo Musetti. Similarly, Spain was hampered by the absence of their star and world No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, who had to withdraw due to a leg injury.
