Jannik Sinner Gets Honest on Learner Tien’s Potential Post-QF Win at Indian Wells

Fonseca and Tien are widely regarded as two of the most exciting young prospects on the ATP Tour, drawing increasing attention from players, analysts, and fans alike. While Tien has captured one title in Metz so far, Fonseca holds a slight edge with two trophies in Basel and Buenos Aires. Given their rapid rise, discussions are intensifying over which of the two could soon mount a serious challenge to established stars such as Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Both youngsters encountered a formidable challenge when they faced Sinner in their respective rounds at Indian Wells. Fonseca indeed troubled Sinner during their fourth-round clash, with both sets ultimately decided in tie-breaks. The Brazilian came close to taking the opener after racing to a 6-3 lead in the tie-break, but Sinner held firm, saving three set points before sealing it 7-6(6).

Fonseca again threatened in the second set, moving ahead 5-3, yet the Italian relied on his experience to claw his way back and force another tie-break. Sinner then edged that as well, 7-6(4), to secure his place in the quarterfinals of the season’s first ATP Masters 1000 event.

In contrast, Sinner faced far less resistance against Tien in the quarterfinals. The Italian raced through the opening set 6-1 and maintained that momentum to wrap up the second 6-2, sealing a comfortable victory. Despite the straightforward result, Sinner acknowledged the American’s progress, noting that Tien’s game has improved considerably and predicting that he will be a difficult opponent to overcome in the future.

“Look, it’s tough to say also because we just played now two times in quite similar courts because Beijing and here the ball can get very slow at times. So I have the firepower to go a bit against him but in the same time has improved a lot regardless of the result of today. I saw that he has improved a lot and he’s going to be very tough to beat in the future. He had some great results especially already this year, early of the year. He is very consistent player and also lefty which we don’t have many,” he told Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj.

The world No. 2 said the quick win in the heat helped conserve energy and confirmed he would follow a normal practice routine before facing Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

“So this is going to be very good for him in the future. Look, very happy about today’s match and playing under the heat and not staying as long in the court, it helps me. There are not so many changes we have to do those for tomorrow,” he said.

“We have a very normal practice day without shortening up anything. And as I said, now the stages are getting bigger, semifinals against Sascha (Zverev), there are big stages, but this is what I practice for. So let’s see what is coming,” he concluded.

Sinner Draws Contrast Between Fonseca and Tien’s Game Following Indian Wells Wins

When asked about his intense fourth-round clash with Fonseca and how his team assessed the contest, Sinner offered his response.

“It was a very interesting match. For me, very very close. I maybe dropped a bit of concentration when I was up the break in the second set. But, João is an incredible player. Very different to Learner, I do believe Learner is also in this level. Maybe João has this firepower a bit more. It’s more natural for him, but Learner has different qualities. And they are going to be very tough to beat in the future,” he said.

After contrasting the firepower of Tien and Fonseca, Sinner stressed the importance of maintaining an aggressive approach, adding that such a mindset could also serve him well at the upcoming Miami Open.

“But after that match, I saw a couple of things where we have to improve. Not only to play against João for the next time, but in general things. It helped me also for a confidence boost. You know, I’m getting out there today and trying to play a very aggressive tennis and  hopefully will help me not only for here but then also for the next tournament in Miami, last hard court event before grinding on the clay,” he added.

Standing between Sinner and a place in the final of the BNP Paribas Open is fourth seed Zverev, who advanced after dispatching Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-3. The German will be eager to reverse his recent struggles against the Italian, having lost their last five meetings. Apart from that history, the PFSN’s simulator heavily favors Sinner, with 78% chances of progressing to the final.
