Jannik Sinner Prioritizes Italy’s World Cup Hopes During Miami Open Press Duties

Coming off a title win at Indian Wells, the World No. 2 has reached the semifinals without dropping a single set, extending a historic streak of 30 consecutive sets won at the Masters 1000 level. This run allowed him to surpass Novak Djokovic’s previous record of 24 consecutive sets.

The Italian tennis star’s campaign began in the second round against Damir Dzumhur, where he secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory. He followed this with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over 30th seed Corentin Moutet in the third round.

The most significant challenge for Sinner thus far came in the fourth round against American Alex Michelsen, where the Italian recovered from a 2-5 deficit in the second set to eventually prevail 7-5, 7-6(4).

He then returned to his clinical best in the quarterfinals, dismantling home favorite Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 6-2. He moved into the semifinals, where he is scheduled to face third seed Alexander Zverev as he continues his pursuit of the “Sunshine Double.”

In a post-match press conference following his quarterfinal victory, Sinner was asked about Italy’s high-stakes push to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Sinner said, “Yes, I will watch. That’s why we need to hurry up a bit. So, let’s see what’s coming. I mean, we have a positive mentality. We hope for a good match and we know what’s on the line. So, I will be supportive.”

His words came at a tense moment for Italian soccer. Italy is currently in a high-stakes playoff campaign to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having not yet officially qualified.

What Is at Stake for Italy in Their 2026 FIFA World Cup Playoff Journey?

After failing to secure direct qualification through the group stages, where they finished behind Norway in Group I, the team entered the UEFA playoff system under the management of Gennaro Gattuso.

This has been a tense period for the national side as they face the very real pressure of potentially missing their third consecutive World Cup, an unthinkable scenario for a four-time champion.

The team took a significant step forward by defeating Northern Ireland 2-0 in the playoff semifinals held in Bergamo.
