Carlos Alcaraz has shared a clear message about how he is approaching his recovery. The injured Spaniard has hinted that skipping the French Open is quite possible, as he prioritizes long-term fitness.
Jannik Sinner, meanwhile, has shared his feelings about his rival’s absence. He wants Alcaraz to compete in Paris as he aims to turn the tables.
Jannik Sinner Addresses Carlos Alcaraz’s Injury
Sinner and Alcaraz have played only one official match so far this year. It was the Italian who came through in straight sets in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters just over a week ago.
In the days that followed, Alcaraz injured his wrist, forcing him to abandon the Barcelona Open despite winning the opening match. He then backed out of the Madrid Open after understanding the seriousness of the injury.
The World No. 2 was spotted wearing a cast on Monday, as he accepted the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award in Madrid. Sinner, who was also nominated in the category, expressed his concern during the event.
“He is going through a difficult moment: we hope to see him again soon on the courts, maybe already in Rome. As a competitor, I hope he can also be there at Roland-Garros, because when you want to win, you want to do it by beating the best, and he is among them,” he told Sky Sport.
Alcaraz was asked questions about his injury on multiple occasions at the event. “The next test is going to be crucial, so to speak. We’re trying to do everything we can so that test goes well, with patience.”
“We’re waiting a little bit there. We have tests coming in the next few days, and from there… well, we’ll see how the injury is and the steps to follow. For now, I’m trying to stay positive and upbeat, even though these days are dragging on,” he told RTVE.
During his press conference, the Spaniard expressed caution about resuming his campaign as he navigates the injury. “We have a very long career ahead, many years to come; forcing myself in this Roland-Garros could harm me a lot for the future. So as I said, we’ll see how things go in the test and then we’ll decide based on that.”
“Temos uma carreira muito longa, muitos anos pela frente.Forçar este Roland Garros pode me prejudicar para os torneios futuros.Então vamos esperar para ver os exames. Eu prefiro voltar um pouco mais tarde, mas muito bem, do que voltar cedo correndo e mal.”pic.twitter.com/tz5M0Tyaat

Alcaraz was defending no points at the Madrid Open, having also missed the tournament last year. He is, however, defending 3,000 points at the Italian Open and the French Open as the defending champion at both events.
With Sinner participating at the Masters 1000 event in Madrid, he is sure to extend his ranking points lead over the Spaniard. The Italian is defending 1,950 points across the clay swing, having been the runner-up in Rome and Paris.
