Jannik Sinner’s comfortable straight-sets win at the 2026 Miami Open came with an unexpected moment of sportsmanship that stood out more than the scoreline. After defeating Damir Džumhur 6-3, 6-3 in a routine second-round clash at Hard Rock Stadium, the Italian took it upon himself to apologize to his opponent at the net.
The gesture came amid a tense backdrop, as Džumhur had been repeatedly targeted by a disruptive spectator whose persistent heckling drew the officials’ attention and briefly unsettled the match. The heckler, who was loudly cheering for Sinner, also disturbed the Italian by screaming his name right before he served.
Jannik Sinner Apologizes to Damir Dzumhur at the Miami Open
The incident added an unusual layer to what was otherwise a routine outing for the world No. 2, who has built a reputation for calmness under pressure.
Matches at marquee ATP events like Miami often draw lively crowds, but direct and persistent heckling remains rare and frowned upon. For Džumhur, the interruptions appeared to affect his rhythm, prompting intervention from chair umpire Renaud Lichtenstein.
During a changeover in the second set, Lichtenstein addressed the situation directly with his supervisor, relaying concerns from both players.
“Damir is upset with the guy with the green shirt and Jannik is telling me he’s betting on the match,” Lichtenstein said. “I don’t know what we should do. Maybe we could talk to him to relax.” The supervisor responded that action was already underway, saying, “We’ve got security on the way. So … I think he’s just an idiot.”

Despite the interruption, Sinner maintained control on the court and closed out the match efficiently. What followed, however, underscored his awareness of the moment. At the handshake, he offered a sincere apology to Džumhur on behalf of the spectator.

Sinner’s Previous Heckling Incident at Indian Wells
The episode came just weeks after Sinner had experienced a rare and high-voltage confrontation with a spectator during his fourth-round match at Indian Wells against the 19-year-old Brazilian sensation, João Fonseca. The match itself was a grueling affair, with Sinner eventually winning in two tight tiebreaker sets, 7-6(6), 7-6(4).

However, the tension peaked late in the first set while Sinner was trailing 5-6 but leading 40-15 on his own serve. Visibly irritated by a heckler who had been targeting him throughout the match, Sinner stopped play and walked directly toward the front row of the stands.
He was seen pointing his finger and speaking sharply to a specific individual, an uncharacteristic display of frustration for the normally stoic Italian.
The situation became serious enough that the chair umpire, Greg Allensworth, had to step down from his chair to intervene. Allensworth addressed the crowd directly, stating, “If we could just not talk during the point, we’d appreciate it,” while urging Sinner to return to the baseline to continue the match.
Looking ahead in Miami, Sinner advanced to the third round, where he will face the No. 30 seed Corentin Moutet. This will be their second meeting on the ATP Tour, with the Italian winning their only match in the fourth round at the 2024 Roland Garros. The winner of this match will face either Alejandro Tabilo or Alex Michelsen in the fourth round.
