Jannik Sinner’s Davis Cup Snub Propels Organization to Call for Italian to be Stripped of All National Honors

Jannik Sinner's Davis Cup withdrawal has seen him face a lot of criticism in Italy.

World No. 2 Jannik Sinner’s decision to remain absent from representing Italy at the 2025 Davis Cup Final 8 has attracted ire from the Italian consumer and environmental protection organisation named Codacons. The organisation has therefore released a stern statement highlighting the removal of all official awards and national honors from the Italian star.

Codacons Reflect Their Displeasure With Jannik Sinner’s Decision for 2025 Davis Cup Final 8

A crucial part of the Italian team, Jannik Sinner won the Davis Cup titles in 2023 and 2024, and this year he will not participate to assist the team in hopes of clinching another title.

His decision to step away from representing the country at the prestigious international event is met by outrage from the Italian consumer and environmental protection organisation Codacons. In an official statement released on Oct. 21, 2025, the organisation reflected its discontent with Sinner’s decision.

“Following Jannik Sinner’s rejection of the Davis Cup, Codacons is calling for the withdrawal of all official awards and honors awarded to the tennis player. Sinner’s decision to forgo playing in the Davis Cup represents a slap in the face to Italy, to Italians, and to millions of passionate tennis fans, the association explains.” (shared via Codacons’ official site)

The statement further read:

“Every athlete has the right to decide their own career and to put other interests, including financial ones, ahead of those of the country they represent, but such a decision must be pursued consistently. One cannot represent Italy worldwide when it comes to withdrawing official honors, only to then make sporting decisions that go in the exact opposite direction.”

Furthermore, Codacons also highlighted that, among other honors, Sinner’s appointment as “Ambassador of Sports Diplomacy” by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, honorary citizenship by the City of Turin, and the Golden Collar for Sporting Merit by the Italian National Olympic Committee should be withdrawn.

Why Did Jannik Sinner Decide Not to Play at the Davis Cup Final 8

The Innichen, South Tyrol, native is recently competing at the 2025 Erste Bank Open in Vienna and has defeated Daniel Altmaier in the round of 32.

During media day in Vienna, he shared his thoughts on why he has decided not to play at this year’s Davis Cup Final 8, which will be held in Bologna, Italy, from 18-23 Nov.

It wasn’t an easy decision, but after Turin [where the ATP Finals are played the week before the Davis Cup], the goal is to start off on the right foot in Australia. It doesn’t seem like it, but a week of preparation in that period can make a difference.” he shared via ESPN

Sinner aims to start his season with complete preparation for the 2026 Australian Open; hence, he decided not to play at the Davis Cup Final 8. The Italian got off to a strong start in Vienna, as he thrashed Daniel Altmaier 6-0, 6-2 in less than an hour. He will next face compatriot Flavio Cobolli, with the winner taking on either eighth seed Alexander Bublik or Francisco Cerúndolo in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event.
