Polish tennis star and world No. 2 Iga Świątek has repeatedly shown her fondness for renowned American pop star Taylor Swift. That was further underscored during her ongoing run at the 2026 Australian Open, when she shared her candid opinions on the criticism aimed at Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ album, released last year in October.
Iga Świątek Gets Honest on ‘Catchy’ Taylor Swift Album As She Responds to Critics With ‘Different Expectations’
Świątek is one of the most dominant players on tour and is bidding for her first Australian Open title, a prize that has eluded her for years. She has already won the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, and needs the Melbourne Major to complete a career Grand Slam.
Świątek opened her Australian Open campaign against China’s Yue Yuan and, despite facing stiff resistance, sealed a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory to progress to the second round. She now turns her attention to Marie Bouzková, though following her latest win, the Pole was asked to weigh in on another global superstar, Taylor Swift.
When questioned about Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ and whether it still held up for her in the face of post-release criticism, Świątek replied: “Honestly, people are going to criticize everything, so… I think it was great. I mean, it’s kind of short. It’s not like you’re going to find some surprising things on it after you listened to it couple of times,” she said during her post-match press conference.
Świątek said Swift delivered exactly what she promised, praising the album’s catchy songs and overall impact. She acknowledged that art invites subjective interpretation, and differing expectations often lead people to focus on criticism rather than intent.
“The songs are catchy. That’s what she wanted. That’s what she said from the beginning. She achieved the goal she wanted. Every song is a hit on this album. But yeah, I guess you can find different stuff in art and music. If some people have different expectations and they look at an album like that, they will always find something to criticize,” she added.
Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” released on Oct. 3, 2025, delivers a vibrant pop-rock exploration of fame, romance, most notably her relationship with Travis Kelce, and the realities behind The Eras Tour. Standout tracks include “The Fate of Ophelia”, “Opalite”, “Father Figure”, and a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for the title track.
It’s worth noting that Świątek is an avid Swift fan, never hesitating to show her enthusiasm for the pop superstar. The six-time Major champion even received exclusive merchandise and a handwritten letter from the pop superstar herself in connection with the album.
