Jannik Sinner had to escape a champagne cork that landed on Centre Court during his Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz and spoke about that in his winner’s speech. This happened only a day after women’s singles champion Iga Świątek spoke about this during her speech.
There have been a few instances of champagne bottles being opened during matches, and the same happened during the men’s singles final.
Jannik Sinner on Dodging Champagne Cork During Wimbledon Final
Sinner produced the first break of the final but Alcaraz eventually bounced back to win the opening set 6-4. The Italian was a break up in the second set and attempted to take a 3-1 lead when he was serving at advantage during the fourth game.
At this point, someone from the audience opened a champagne bottle and the cork landed on Centre Court, much to Carlos Alcaraz’s annoyance. A ball girl eventually took the cork out of the court and play resumed.

Sinner eventually produced some impressive tennis to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and win his fourth Grand Slam title. He also became the first Italian singles champion at Wimbledon. After the match, the 23-year-old was asked about escaping the champagne cork and whether he had to deal with this before.
“No only here at Wimbledon, but that’s exactly why we love playing here. It’s a very expensive tournament,” the Italian said.

Sinner’s win marks his victory over Alcaraz since the semifinals of the 2023 China Open. The Spaniard won five matches on a trot against the Italian before the Wimbledon. This included their titanic battle at the 2024 French Open, where Alcaraz came back from two sets down and saved a championship point to successfully defend his title at the clay-court Major.
Iga Świątek’s Comments on Champagne Sounds After Wimbledon Win
Iga Świątek thanked the Wimbledon crowd during her winner’s speech and said that she would always remember champagne bottles being opened between serves.
“Thank you guys for coming here, for being a part of this amazing event,” Świątek said. “I am always going to remember the opening of champagne bottles between serves. It’s a sound that will keep me up at night. It’s really amazing, I’m gonna enjoy these moments.”
The Pole’s 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Amanda Anisimova marked only the third time a Grand Slam final ended in a double bagel.
