Marta Kostyuk on her Cincinnati Open Withdrawal Before 3R Clash With Iga Świątek

Marta Kostyuk suffered a wrist injury during the Canadian Open that eventually led her to withdraw from her quarterfinal againts Elena Rybakina. The Ukrainian then competed at the Cincinnati Open as the 25th seed and received a bye to the second round. She booked her place in the third round with a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Tatjana Maria.

Kostyuk was scheduled to face Iga Świątek for a place in the fourth round of the WTA 1000 event but she withdrew from the tournament. The Ukrainian said that while winning her opening match in Cincinnati meant a lot, she would focus on healing at the present.

“The wrist injury I sustained in Montreal has been a challenge these past days. I gave everything to be ready for Cincinnati. With the help of my incredible team, I managed to step on court and finish my match yesterday. It meant a lot to compete despite the pain, but I need to listen to my body. I’ll focus on healing, getting stronger, and coming back ready. Thank you, Cincinnati. See you soon, New York,” Kostyuk wrote on Instagram.

Iga Świątek Will Face Either Sorana Cîrstea or Yue Yuan in Cincinnati Open 4R

Following her walkover in the third round, Iga Świątek will lock horns either lucky loser Yue Yuan or Sorana Cîrstea in the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open. Both players beat seeded opponents to book their place in the third round of the WTA 1000 event, with the Chinese beating 14th seed Diana Shnaider 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 while Cîrstea triumphed 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-4 over 22nd seed Magdalena Fręch.

While Świątek is yet to take on Yue Yuan, she has a 4-0 head-to-head lead over Sorana Cîrstea. If the Pole beats either player, she will reach the quarterfinals in Cincinnati for the third year in a row.
Earlier in Cincinnati, Świątek beat Anastasia Potapova 6-1, 6-4 to book her place in the third round of the WTA 1000 event. Before competing at the tournament, the Pole endured a fourth-round exit at the Canadian Open after losing to Clara Tauson.
