The duo of Iga Świątek and Casper Ruud fought off Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe 4-1, 4-2 before ousting American Caty McNally and Italian Lorenzo Musetti by the same scoreline to move into the semifinals of the US Open mixed doubles event.
The results were made all the more impressive since Świątek had won the Cincinnati Open hours earlier with a victory over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini. However, confusion ensued afterward as Świątek and Ruud debated who had suggested pairing up first.
Casper Ruud and Świątek Had a Hilarious Exchange Over Who ‘Texted First’
After sealing a spot in the semifinals, Ruud claimed that the Pole had suggested pairing up for the revamped US Open mixed doubles.
“I had in mind that if wanted to play I’d be down and then she actually shot me a text and asked if I wanted to play,” said the Norwegian player. However, Świątek hilariously interrupted him, giving a different version of the events.
“That’s not possible because when your agent asked my agent, I think, or you asked me, I had no idea what I’m signing up for,” she said. “I was like, okay, I wanna play with Casper.”
She continued, “I didn’t know what the tournament is even gonna look like.”
“So it must have been you,” she told Ruud.

How Did Iga Świątek Find Energy at the US Open Hours After Cincinnati Triumph?
Świątek has explained how she found the energy to compete at the US Open mixed doubles event despite her successful run to the recently concluded Cincinnati Open title.
“Honestly I think actually it’s kind of nice for the recovery as well to have another task and not let yourself be lazy, but already focus on the next exciting thing,” said the Pole.
She insisted that she has enough energy to compete in mixed doubles, which is “less intense” than singles.

Świątek said, “I wouldn’t say I don’t have energy or something like that. Also, if I’m used to playing singles, mixed doubles, it is less intense. You don’t need to run that much, so I’m enjoying it.”
The Pole’s partner, Ruud, has also lauded her determination to show up for the mixed doubles event.
“I think it’s her will in the end and she decided to show up here, which is wildly impressive because she got to bed 12 hours ago in her hotel in New York,” Ruud said. “I was in the gym working on my backswing and I looked at Iga like, ‘This is determination like I’ve never seen it before!'”
