Alcaraz entered the New York Major after winning the Cincinnati Open, where he won the final after Sinner retired after only five games due to illness. The 22-year-old did not drop a single set en route to the US Open final, beating Reilly Opelka, Mattia Bellucci, 32nd seed Luciano Darderi, Arthur Rinderknech, 20th seed Jiří Lehečka, and seventh seed Novak Djokovic.

Alcaraz’s win over Sinner will see him earn a prize money of $5,000,000 while the Italian will pocket $2.5 million for his runner-up finish. The Spaniard’s victory also means that for the second year in a row, him and Jannik Sinner will share the Grand Slam spoils.
