Holger Rune Explains Why Another Grand Slam Success Is Not ‘Impossible’ for Novak Djokovic

Holger Rune offers candid insight into Serbian tennis icon Novak Djokovic’s chances of winning another Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic may be enduring a prolonged Grand Slam title drought, but Holger Rune believes the Serb is far from finished at the sport’s biggest stage. The Dane pointed to the sheer unpredictability of Djokovic’s game, stressing that if any other player were at this stage of their career, he would doubt their chances, but with Djokovic, another Grand Slam triumph remains entirely possible.

Holger Rune Weighs In on Novak Djokovic’s Chances of Winning Another Grand Slam

Djokovic is widely regarded as one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen, having amassed 101 tour-level titles and a record 24 Grand Slam crowns. However, his trademark dominance has waned over the past two seasons, prompting many to suggest he may be entering a transitional phase of his career. The 38-year-old endured a titleless 2024 campaign, marking the first time since 2017 that he finished a season without lifting a Grand Slam trophy.

There were signs of resurgence in 2025, with Djokovic adding two ATP 250 titles to his résumé to take his career tally to 101 trophies. A Masters 1000 success seemed within reach at the Miami Open; however, he eventually fell to Jakub Menšík in the final. Yet, the ultimate prize continued to elude him, despite semifinal appearances at all four majors.

Even amid a dip in Djokovic’s form, Rune insists the Serb’s consistency remains remarkable, pointing out that he continues to reach at least the semifinals at almost every tournament he enters. The Dane, meanwhile, is currently sidelined from competition as he recovers from a serious Achilles injury sustained during the Stockholm semifinals last October.

“What Novak is doing is impressive. In every tournament, he reaches at least the semi-finals, and people are talking about when he’ll stop,” he told Marca.

Rune emphasized that the 24-time Grand Slam champion operates beyond conventional limits, making age-based assumptions irrelevant. While he would dismiss Grand Slam chances for any other player at this stage, Djokovic’s extraordinary consistency means that even further major titles cannot be ruled out.

“You never know with Novak. What he’s doing is already impossible, so if you ask me if it’s impossible for him to win more Grand Slams, if you ask me about any other player his age, I’d say no, impossible, but if you ask me about Novak, I’ll tell you that nothing is impossible,” he added.

Last year, the Australian Open was marked by a physical setback for Djokovic, who retired during his semifinal encounter due to a leg injury. Moreover, he also reached the semifinals at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, but was stopped by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, underlining the growing challenge of getting past the World’s top two.

Djokovic had been scheduled to play the 2026 Adelaide International but has withdrawn, leaving him without any competitive matches ahead of the Australian Open. It marks the first time in eight years that he will enter Melbourne without a lead-up tournament.
