Rune’s Stockholm Heartbreak and Road to Recovery

During the Stockholm Open semifinals on October 18, Rune suffered a complete rupture of his Achilles tendon. He was playing against Ugo Humbert and leading 6-4, 2-2 in the second set when the injury happened. While trying to reach a shot, he landed awkwardly and felt what he described as a “pop” in his Achilles. The injury forced him to leave the match in tears, ending what had been a great year for the young Danish player.

Rune underwent surgery on October 22, 2025, at Aleris-Hamlet Hospital in Copenhagen under the supervision of Dr. Morten Boesen. Medical teams said he would need six to twelve months to recover, whereas some experts believe the timeline could be even longer. Former ATP player Sam Querrey has said that while his body might heal in about a year, mentally he could take much longer to feel completely ready to play again.

The injury has sparked debate about how much players have to play on the professional tennis circuit. Rune’s mother, Aneke, spoke to Danish media and criticized the ATP Tour’s packed schedule. She said there are too many mandatory tournaments and not enough time for players to rest properly. She pointed out that the ATP heavily penalizes players who skip tournaments, and the demanding schedule led to her son’s injury.

Rune had an impressive 2025 season, winning his first ATP title at Barcelona after two years. He last won the BMW Open back in April 2023, before beating then World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz on April 20 in the finals. He also reached the finals of the Masters 1000 at Indian Wells, losing to British No. 1 Jack Draper in straight sets. The entire tennis world watches as Rune recovers and makes his return to the courts.
