Holger Rune Hits Out at Fake News After Veronika Kudermetova Drops Public Hint About His Interest in Her

Holger Rune slammed a viral post claiming he was looking for love, after Veronika Kudermetova shared a lighthearted story about him.

When fake news hits tennis social media, most players just ignore it. Not Holger Rune. The Danish star recently fired back at a parody post making the rounds online, which jokingly claimed he was desperately seeking love on Instagram.

But instead of letting it slide, Rune called out the fabricated message and urged fans to report accounts spreading lies about him.

How Did Veronika Kudermetova’s Podcast Story Lead to Holger Rune Fake News?

The drama started after WTA star Veronika Kudermetova appeared on a podcast hosted by her former doubles partner Elena Vesnina. During the conversation, Kudermetova shared an awkward anecdote involving Rune that quickly went viral. The 28-year-old Russian revealed that Rune had messaged her recently, but their conversation ended abruptly when she reminded him about their age gap and her married status.

“Rune recently texted me. I told him, ‘Boy, I’m probably too old for you. If you looked at my Instagram, you’d see I have a husband.’ He replied, ‘Oh, sorry.’ After that, he stopped saying hi to me.”

The lighthearted confession became instant meme material across tennis social media, setting the stage for what happened next. A fake account called ‘Tennis Centel’ on X decided to capitalize on the buzz by creating a completely fabricated Instagram story supposedly from Rune. The doctored post read:

“Tennis tour can be lonely. I’m single and looking for love. I want to meet one of my fans in Toronto. Mature women only, 30+, if you have kids that’s ok. Send me direct message with age and pics.”

However, Rune wasn’t amused by the parody. The current ATP World No. 9 responded directly to the fake post on X, writing, “Too much fake info here on X 😏 please do report accounts faking like this.”

Kudermetova has been married to Sergei Demekhine since 2017. Her husband is a former coach and retired tennis player. The couple began dating in 2015 when she was 18, two years before tying the knot.

How Are Both Players Performing at the Canadian Open This Week?

While the social media drama unfolds, both Rune and Kudermetova are focused on their tennis at the National Bank Open. Rune is making his fourth appearance at the tournament in Toronto, where he entered as the fifth seed and received a bye into the second round.

The Dane defeated Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in straight sets to advance to the third round. Next up for Rune is a challenging match against 29th seed Alexandre Müller. The winner of that encounter will face either 10th seed Daniil Medvedev or 18th seed Alexei Popyrin in the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, Kudermetova is competing in both singles and doubles events at Montreal. In singles, she’s already made impressive progress, defeating Cristina Bucșa and 29th seed Olga Danilović to reach the third round.

Her next challenge comes in the form of American star Coco Gauff, a matchup that promises fireworks. This will mark their fourth meeting on the WTA Tour, with Gauff currently holding a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head record.

The winner of this clash will advance to face either Victoria Mboko or Marie Bouzková in the fourth round.
