Baptiste recently reached a career-high ranking of World No. 25 after reaching the semifinal of the Madrid Open. En route to the final four, she beat the likes of Jasmine Paolini, Belina Bencic, and World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
“It just shows me where my game lies, and I’ve always believed it, and I feel like now I’m starting to put it into action and the world is seeing it as well,” Baptiste said after beating Sabalenka.
She entered the French Open as the 26th seed and secured a remarkable comeback victory against 2021 champion Barbora Krejčíková in the first round. In the second round, she severely injured her left leg while battling against Wang Xiyu, resulting in immediate retirement.
“The most heartbreaking end to the best season of my life. Still waiting to wake up from this nightmare. In my head, all I can think is why, why, and why. Why me? Why now? And why like this?” she wrote in her Instagram message.
“It’s hard to see any purpose in something like this right now, but in my heart, I truly believe everything happens for a reason,” the 24-year-old said. “It’s been a long and heavy couple of days filled with bad news, uncontrollable tears, and a million thoughts running through my head.”
Baptiste chose strength and courage in the face of adversity. “I’m beyond ready to show how strong I really am. The reality is, things could be a lot worse, and I have the most amazing and loving people around me,” she wrote. “I will be back, and I will be better.”
