Frances Tiafoe made a notable move during his second-round clash against Zachary Svajda at the Delray Beach Open. His gesture came in the wake of an unusual episode from his opening-round match, when the umpire concealed the Barclays sponsor patch on the front of his shirt. The incident indeed took social media by storm and later forced Tiafoe to make a major change in his on-court attire.
Frances Tiafoe Opts for a Black Shirt With Sleeves at the Delray Beach Open Days After Protest on Sponsor Erasure
Tiafoe opened his run at the ATP 250 in Delray Beach with a composed straight-sets win over Australia’s Rinky Hijikata. Yet the spotlight briefly shifted away from the tennis when the chair umpire interrupted play and walked over with a black marker, triggering an unexpected on-court moment.
During the match, Tiafoe wore a sleeveless shirt with three sponsor logos across the front, including one for Barclays. However, ATP regulations permit only two front-facing logos on a player’s top, with clear restrictions on size and placement. That rule violation led the chair umpire to step in.
The official proceeded to black out the logo on the upper right side of the American’s sleeveless shirt. The incident quickly caught attention, especially given Tiafoe’s prominent partnership with the British banking group as its Official Tennis Ambassador since 2023. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old shook his head in disbelief as the official carried out his duty.
Days after the episode, Tiafoe ensured there was no repeat of the controversy by opting for a black, short-sleeved shirt in his second-round clash with compatriot Svajda. Under ATP guidelines, while only two logos are allowed on the front of a shirt, additional sponsor branding can be placed on the sleeves.

While Tiafoe responded to the situation with a clear adjustment in attire, he has previously called for the change of ATP’s apparel regulations. Still, his priority remains firmly on tennis. Putting the distraction behind him, Tiafoe battled past compatriot Zachary Svajda 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in a hard-fought contest to book his place in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event.
The American will next face his compatriot and fourth seed Learner Tien, marking their second encounter on tour, with Tiafoe holding a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head.
