What Happened During Frances Tiafoe-Brandon Nakashima’s Doubles Match?

Nakashima teamed up with Tiafoe to contest the men’s doubles draw at the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships. The American pair showcased impressive chemistry with their complementary styles – Nakashima’s steady groundstrokes paired with Tiafoe’s aggressive volleys.

The Americans dominated the hard courts against their opponents, compatriots Alex Michelson and Gabriel Diallo, in the first-round doubles match.

However, there was a moment during the first set that caught everyone’s attention. In the fourth game of the first set, when the American pair was at a 15-0 advantage, one mistake by Tiafoe became the highlight of the match.

Tiafoe served for the game, and their opponents returned perfectly to Nakashima, who was at the nets. The volley turned aggressive, with quick shots being returned near the net. Nakashima was carrying the ball perfectly, taking on both of his opponents simultaneously.

However, he couldn’t reach the ball at one point in the match, and Tiafoe was forced to pursue it, which was only the second time he went after the ball since serving.

He ran to reach the ball, managed to hit it, but accidentally hit Nakashima while returning. This moment immediately sent waves of laughter through the entire stadium, and even their opponents couldn’t control their laughter.

Nakashima first shared this moment on his Instagram story, writing, “Good job Foe,” showing his reaction to the incident.

Tiafoe joined in later, posting the same moment on his Instagram Story, jokingly blaming his partner for the mishap. He wrote, “This what happens when yo partner don’t put the ball away,” tagging Nakashima with laughing emojis.

Both players are known for their singles careers, but they do team up occasionally for the doubles draw, mainly due to the camaraderie, and Tiafoe enjoys playing with him. This special bond between the Americans was exactly what happened during today’s match, leading to another funny moment, rather than competitive tennis.

Tiafoe’s 2025 Japan Open Campaign So Far

After trading sets 6-2, 4-6, Nakashima and Tiafoe triumphed 10-5 in the championship tiebreak to clinch a 2-1 victory and move into the quarterfinals. The pair will now meet the second seeds, Hugo Nys and Édouard Roger-Vasselin, who advanced with another thrilling three-set win in their opening match.

A couple of days ago, Tiafoe’s singles campaign ended abruptly in the first round. Facing qualifier Márton Fucsovics, the eighth seed struggled to find rhythm on his first serve. Fucsovics sealed a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 upset, prompting Tiafoe to vent his frustration by smashing his racket against the court immediately after the match point.

The loss marked Tiafoe’s fourth straight defeat across tour and Davis Cup play, dropping him to No. 29 in the ATP rankings.
