Canada vs. Belgium Head-to-Head

This is the first time Canada and Belgium will be facing each other in the United Cup.

Auger-Aliassime began his season on a strong note, winning his first match of the season with a routine 6-4, 6-4 win over Zhang Zhizhen. On the other hand, Bergs did not have the best of starts, as he lost his match against Zhang, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (3), 5-7, in a closely fought match.

On the women’s front, both Mboko and Mertens began their United Cup campaigns with wins in their respective matches against Lin Zhu of China. While Mertens won with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 scoreline, Mboko had to come back after being a set down, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 against the Chinese opponent.

Canada vs. Belgium Prediction

The official head-to-head between Auger-Aliassime and Bergs is 0-0 as they have yet to meet on the Tour, but the Canadian did have a tough three-set win over the Belgian, securing a tight 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory in qualifying in Antwerp back in 2018.

The Canadian had a 41-15 win-loss record on hard courts last year, with two titles to his name, whereas the Belgian had a 27-20 win-loss record on hard courts, with a runner-up finish at Auckland being his best result on the surface.

Mertens and Mboko have yet to meet on the WTA Tour. Last year, including ITF and Challenger matches, Maboko had an astounding 47-8 win-loss record on hard courts, winning five titles on the Challenger Tour and ITF Tours, and winning two titles in Toronto and Hong Kong on the WTA Tour. Meanwhile, Mertens had a 22-13 win-loss record on hard courts, winning the title in Singapore.

In the deciding doubles, if the previous fixtures of both teams are anything to go by, then the singles players will team up for both teams in the doubles match as well. Auger-Aliassime and Mboko won their doubles match against the Chinese team, whereas the team of Mertens and Bergs lost against the same opponents.

Mertens, being a former Major champion in doubles, might give the Belgian team a slight edge in the doubles. Still, overall, Team Canada should win the tie as both Auger-Aliassime and Mboko are higher-ranked players than their Belgian counterparts and are in great form.

Pick: Canada to win 2-1
