How Did Carlos Alcaraz’s San Francisco Trip Set the Stage for Eugenie Bouchard’s Playful Remark?

Alcaraz is in town for the 2025 Laver Cup, which is being staged in San Francisco for the very first time. From Sept. 19 to 21, the Chase Center, home of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, will transform into a tennis arena for the annual team competition.

Established in 2017 by Roger Federer and his management company Team8, the Laver Cup pays tribute to Australian great Rod Laver and has become one of the sport’s most popular exhibition-style events.

It follows a Ryder Cup-inspired format, with six players from Team Europe squaring off against six from Team World over three days of singles and doubles action. For this year’s edition, Frenchman Yannick Noah will lead Team Europe, while American legend Andre Agassi captains Team World.

The 22-year-old Spaniard took a guided tour of the island, once known as “The Rock.” The pictures, posted on the Laver Cup’s official X account, captured him snapping photos with the prison as the backdrop and observing through binoculars. Once a maximum-security facility that housed some of the United States’ most notorious criminals, the prison closed in 1963 and today serves as a major tourist attraction, drawing over a million visitors a year.

Bouchard reshared the post on her account, adding her one-line reaction that read, “I waited so long for this.”

Team Europe features Alcaraz alongside Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Menšík and Flavio Cobolli, with Tomáš Macháč as alternate. Team World counters with Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur leading the lineup, supported by Francisco Cerúndolo, Alex Michelsen, João Fonseca, and Reilly Opelka, with Jenson Brooksby as alternate.
