Emma Raducanu secured a straight-sets victory over former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka at the Mubadala Citi DC Open 2025, advancing to the quarter-finals with a confident display of serve management and adaptability to the fast conditions in Washington, D.C. The 22-year-old Briton acknowledged Osaka’s pedigree while highlighting her own tactical execution on court.
Emma Raducanu’s Respectful Praise for Osaka After Citi DC Open Encounter
Raducanu entered the post-match interview with admiration for her opponent’s achievements. She praised Osaka’s ability to dictate play on the surface by saying, “I felt it was going to be a really difficult match. Naomi’s won four Slams, been No. 1, won Masters, she’s so dangerous. On hard courts, she’s particularly comfortable.”
The British player explained that she focused on holding her serve and said, “If you float the second serve, then Naomi’s gonna crunch and I’ll be behind in the points. So I had to trust my abilities on the second serve, and I went for it. And just one double fault in the last service game, so pretty pleased with that. But yeah, I think it was just a really difficult match.”
Regarding mental intensity, Raducanu admitted she expected a challenge but trusted her preparation. “Before I went on court, I knew that I’m gonna have to play really well, and the atmosphere is also very good, so thanks for everyone’s support,” she added.

Earlier, Osaka had expressed concern for Raducanu off court, praising her resilience under media scrutiny. In her press conference, Osaka spoke of Raducanu’s handling of a stalking incident and British media pressure: “I really feel sad for her because that video was one of the most saddest videos I’ve ever seen.”
On court, Osaka struggled with seven double faults and won just 43 percent of second-serve points (16 of 37), while Raducanu held 76 percent of first-serve points.
Raducanu’s win marks her first victory over a top-5 Grand Slam champion since her 2021 U.S. Open run and sets up a quarter-final clash with Maria Sakkari on Friday.
