Emerson Jones’ run at the Adelaide International ended in the first round, as sixth seed Emma Navarro defeated her in straight sets 6–3, 6–3. However, despite the loss, the 17-year-old Australian impressed and earned a huge compliment from the world No. 15.
Emerson Jones Is Grateful for Emma Navarro’s Compliment After Adelaide International Loss
Navarro took control early and made a 3-0 lead in the match. Jones tried to make a comeback late in the set and had two break points when Navarro served at 5–3, but the American didn’t let go of her grip on the set.
The second set began, and Navarro won four straight games. Jones, however, showed some resilience, saved a match point, held the serve, and then tried to close the gap to 5–3. But the former World No. 8 responded immediately and broke Jones again on her third match point to win the match.
However, despite Jones’ loss, Navarro praised the rising talent and said in her post-match interview, “You guys got a good one in Emersson. She challenged me a good bit. And I think she’s gonna be a really great player. So, I’ll be following and rooting for her success.”

When Jones was asked about Navarro’s compliment, she admitted that receiving praise from someone of Navarro’s level made the moment even more meaningful.
“I think that’s pretty cool. Any compliment you get from a top 10, and especially her. She’s such a great player, and her game’s, it’s really hard to play against her. So, yeah, I think that’s pretty cool that she said that,” Jones said.
Jones Is Ready To Take On the Australian Open Challenge
Jones will now shift her focus to the upcoming Australian Open, her second appearance in a Grand Slam. The 17-year-old remains grounded amid constant comparisons with Ashleigh Barty and is confident that she has improved significantly from last year.
“I’m pretty excited to play AO again this year. It was pretty tough last year. I know what to expect because I’ve had so many opportunities last year and this year during the summer. So, yeah, I think I am ready, and I know what to expect. I played a couple of top 10, top 20s, and the whole level pretty much,” she said.
Reflecting on her recent matches, Jones added that her goal is to start winning a few rounds at major tournaments.
Jones began her 2026 season at the Brisbane International, where she won her first match against Tatjana Maria before losing in the second round of the tournament.
