Daniil Medvedev Sends a Message From Dubai Amid Chaos and Uncertainty Over Players’ Indian Wells Appearance

Following the temporary closure of the UAE airspace, Daniil Medvedev sends a message as his Indian Wells participation remains uncertain.

The 2026 ATP Dubai Tennis Championships winner, Daniil Medvedev, finds himself in a stressful situation. The final, scheduled for Saturday, February 28, was cancelled just hours before the players took the court after Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor withdrew, citing a hamstring injury. Medvedev was crowned the champion by default.

Now, the Russian, currently in the United Arab Emirates, is set to enter the Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells, commencing on Wednesday, March 4. With geopolitical tensions rising in the Middle East, his participation at Tennis Paradise hangs in limbo. Griekspoor, meanwhile, has withdrawn from the event due to the aforementioned setback.

Daniil Medvedev’s Message to the Tennis World as His Indian Wells Participation Remains Uncertain

Medvedev entered the ATP 500 event in Dubai as the third seed after lifting the Brisbane International trophy last month. Without dropping a set throughout the tournament, he defeated Shang Juncheng, Stan Wawrinka, and Jenson Brooksby before beating top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinal. With the title clash cancelled, his intense week reached an abrupt end.

Amid these unfortunate events on the court, geopolitical tension escalated in the Middle East, which led to the immediate temporary closure of the country’s airspace by the UAE’s Aviation Authority to ensure everyone’s safety. Kazakh star Alexander Bublik narrowly escaped this lockdown, leaving Middle Eastern airspace for Las Vegas just minutes before the situation heated up.

This closure meant Medvedev and potentially other players who made deep runs in Dubai, including semifinalist Rublev, are now stuck in the Emirates, with no possible way of boarding a flight to the United States. Addressing the circumstances, the World No. 11 sent a message to the tennis world, talking about the situation in Dubai. He said,

“The situation is unusual. But the only thing is that the airspace is closed. No one knows when we’ll be able to fly out there. Well, it’s not clear whether it will be there for long or not, so we’re just waiting to see what happens in the next few hours or days. They’re gradually postponing the airport closure.”

For the fans worrying about the Russian’s well-being, he addressed them by adding, “But for me, everything is fine. I’ve received a lot of messages from friends and acquaintances, and everyone is worried. Well, from my own perspective, I can say that everything is fine here.”

This message from 2026 Dubai Champion Medvedev sends a breath of relief for the tennis community, who had been asking for immediate actions to get the Russian, his wife, Daria Medvedeva, and their two daughters, Alisa and Victoria, out of the tense situation.

Uncertainty Over Medvedev’s Indian Wells Participation

Medvedev is set to enter the Masters 1000 tournament as one of the top seeds, given his high ATP ranking. Presently, Tennis Paradise is hosting the qualifying rounds, with the main draw commencing on Wednesday, March 4. Since the Russian is one of the top seeds, he has received a bye in his first match, giving him a direct spot in the second-round match, which commences on Friday, March 6.

One thing to note is that he is also set to team up with the Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva at the Eisenhower Cup on March 3 to try and challenge the defending champions, Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina.

Apart from Medvedev, Auger-Aliassime teams up with fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez, while Rublev shares the court with American Amanda Anisimova at the same event. If the players are stuck in the Emirates, it would directly affect the lineup.

The tennis world would be keeping an eye on any potential development that could give relief to the players who are stuck in Dubai.
