Daniil Medvedev experienced a bad day at Wimbledon during his first-round match. While being consistently dominated by his opponent, Benjamin Bonzi, the 29-year-old was seen talking to himself, as he bitterly blamed his luck while losing control to the World No.64.
Daniil Medvedev Expresses Shock Over His Rival’s Unexpected Levels at Wimbledon
Two-time Wimbledon semifinalist Medvedev was knocked out in the first round this year in a surprising loss. The World No. 9 faced an unexpected defeat against France’s Bonzi with a final scoreline of 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Venting his frustration, the Russian smashed his racquets against his chair and bag. The defeat marked his failure to reach the second round for the first time in seven Wimbledon appearances.
However, the frustration built its space in Medvedev’s head quite before the racket smash incident. While losing control of the match, he was seen talking to himself and being resentful of his destiny.
“Why not play like this every day, win millions, be rich? …no, he [Benjamin Bonzi] decides to do it once a year,” he said.

Bonzi won the match in three hours and seven minutes and, therefore, secured a position in the second round at Wimbledon for the third time in his career. He confidently handles baseline play and keeps his serve intact, especially during the tie-breaks in the first and third sets. The Frenchman will now face Jordan Thompson in the next round.
Medvedev Stunned by Rival’s Performance in Wimbledon First Round
During the post-match press conference, Medvedev admitted that he had previously analyzed Bonzi’s performance. According to him, it was generally difficult for the World No. 64 to consistently secure points. He also applauded Bonzi’s breakthrough performance, mentioning that he would be surprised if the Frenchman failed to keep up his levels in the matches to come.
“I was supposed to play him or Halys in Halle. I watched the match. He couldn’t play two balls in the court. Not two in a row. I was surprised. I was like, ‘it’ll be tough against Quentin.’ I played good. I won. Today, he barely missed. A little on the forehand. The backhand I remember maybe three unforced errors.”

“Are you worried about your results in the last 3 Slams? You did not reach the 3rd round.”

“I wish him to play like this. I saw the draw. If he plays how he did today, he’s definitely in the 4th round. Then it’s Fritz. Then it’s tougher. But I would not be surprised if he doesn’t play like this,” he said.
This victory extended Bonzi’s lead against Medvedev in the head-to-head record, setting the current score to 1-0. The Russian had defeated him in the past, but in a Challenger event at Brest in 2017.
