Danielle Collins Previews the Coco Gauff vs. Aryna Sabalenka Miami Open Final

Sabalenka and Gauff have navigated the 96-player draw to set up their 13th meeting on the WTA Tour and fourth in a final. Sabalenka is chasing a Sunshine Double and aiming to defend her 2025 Miami Open title, while Gauff targets her 12th career crown and a maiden triumph at her home event.

Gauff endured an arm injury at the BNP Paribas Open, but after only a short recovery window, she returned in strong fashion in Miami. The 22-year-old battled through a series of three-set encounters before producing a more assured performance, easing past Karolína Muchová in straight sets in the semifinals to book her place in the final.

Sabalenka, meanwhile, has had a relatively smoother and dominant path toward the final. She has won all her matches in straight sets and also dispatched world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in a similar fashion to reach the final.

While the contest is expected to be tightly fought, Danielle Collins believes Gauff’s playing style could pose significant challenges for Sabalenka. She shared her assessment during a conversation with Tennis Channel’s Steve Weissman and Prakash Amritraj.

“They have split those matches, but Coco has come up clutch in some of those finals. I think Coco with that game style, she has the capability to make Sabalenka come up with a lot of errors and also, she forces Sabalenka to have to play outside of her strike zone. Which she doesn’t like to do. Coco’s ball tends to get up above the shoulders of some of these players, especially with the hot-humid conditions here and how the ball goes through the courts,” she said.

Collins explained that Gauff could extract relatively higher bounce from the court, which could essentially reduce Sabalenka’s power. Meanwhile, Gauff’s movement, defensive skills, and use of slices make her difficult to beat, especially in extended rallies and physically demanding points.

“The courts are bouncy, the ball goes up high, and it’s hard for Sabalenka to be able to generate a lot of power from there. She still plays with some incredible power I have to say, but that just what I noticed in their previous match-ups. I think, Coco also does a really good job when she is on the run, throwing in some slices, she scraps out some of these points, Coco is arguably the best mover on tour. It’s gonna be hard for Sabalenka,” she added.

However, the former World No. 7 emphasized that victory won’t come easily for Coco Gauff, as she faces one of the world’s top-ranked stars in Aryna Sabalenka. Collins believes Gauff has the ability to rise to the occasion by delivering her very best.

“Now, Sabalenka is No. 1 in the world, it’s going to be a tough match for Coco. She’s gonna have to play her game. She’s gonna have to serve well, return well, do all the things, but she is certainly capable of doing that, with what we have seen out here this week from her,” she concluded.

The head-to-head between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka is currently tied at 6-6, with Miami set to break the deadlock. Their last outdoor hard-court clash was in Wuhan 2024, where Sabalenka prevailed in three sets. According to PFSN’s exclusive simulator, the Belarusian enters as the heavy favorite, favored with a 75% chance to defend her title.
