Coco Gauff Attends World Baseball Classic Final Between USA and Venezuela in Miami

Venezuela secured its place in the final by defeating defending champions Japan in the quarterfinals and eliminating Italy in the semifinals. On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, Team Venezuela defeated Team United States 3-2 to win their first World Baseball Classic title. The match was played in front of a sold-out crowd of over 36,000 fans.

Gauff, who was at LoanDepot Park cheering for Team USA, took to social media and shared a photo of the two teams standing on the field before the final, expressing her support for Team USA. However, her support ended in heartbreak as Team Venezuela claimed victory.

“team usa 🇺🇸 !!” Gauff captioned her Instagram story.

On the tennis side of things, Gauff last competed at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. There, she won her opening match against qualifier Kamilla Rakhimova with a score of 6-3, 7-6(5) but had to retire during her third round due to a left-arm injury while facing the 31st seed, Alexandra Eala, with the score at 6-2, 2-0 (retd).

Looking ahead to the Miami Open, Gauff, seeded fourth, will begin her campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. She is set to face either Elisabetta Cocciaretto or a lucky loser, Darja Semeņistaja, in her opening match.

Gauff and Cocciaretto have faced each other four times on the WTA Tour, with the two-time singles Grand Slam champion winning three of those matches. Their most recent encounter was in the second round of the 2026 Qatar Open, where Cocciaretto won 6-4, 6-2.

On the other hand, Gauff and Semeņistaja have never met on the WTA Tour, so their potential second-round match in Florida will mark the first time these two players face each other.

The winner of the second-round match between Gauff and either Cocciaretto or Semeņistaja at the 2026 Miami Open will advance to the third round to play against the 28th seed, Maya Joint, Alycia Parks, or qualifier Sinja Kraus.
