Greek doubles specialist and Stefanos Tsitsipas’ brother, Petros Tsitsipas, had earlier predicted that his compatriot Maria Sakkari would defeat Coco Gauff, citing the American’s recent struggles with her serves. However, his prediction was quickly proven wrong, as Gauff dominated Sakkari in their women’s singles clash during the USA vs. Greece quarterfinal at the United Cup.
The outcome drew reactions from several fans, many of whom poked fun at Tsitsipas’ earlier remarks.
Fans React As Coco Gauff Disproves Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Brother’s United Cup Observation
Gauff has been a key contributor for Team USA at the ongoing United Cup in Australia. The Americans first overcame Argentina, with Gauff spearheading the turnaround by winning her singles match and later playing a decisive role in the mixed doubles, even as Taylor Fritz fell to Sebastián Báez in his singles rubber.
Team USA then defeated Spain in their second tie; although Gauff lost her singles match to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, her performance in the mixed doubles proved crucial in securing a place in the quarterfinals.
Carrying her strong form into Team USA’s quarterfinal tie against Greece, Gauff took on Maria Sakkari in the opening match and remained firmly in control throughout. The American, who had battled persistent serving issues and double faults last season, showed marked improvement, landing 68% of her first serves and winning 76% of those points. Just two days after committing 14 double faults, Gauff reduced that number to six, sealing a commanding 6–3, 6–2 victory.
The outcome, however, stood in stark contrast to Petros Tsitsipas’ pre-match prediction. “Gauff isn’t in her best form. She is struggling with her serve. I like Maria [Sakkari]’s chances,” he said.
Several fans later revisited Tsitsipas’ remarks in light of the tie, with one fan writing, “Coco took that personal 😆 🤣 😂 😹.”

Another marquee clash will see former World No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas face American star Fritz in the second singles match in Perth. Although Fritz currently holds a higher ranking, Tsitsipas leads their head-to-head 3–2.
Both players will be keen to deliver, with a Fritz victory sealing the USA’s place in the semifinals, while a Tsitsipas win would keep Greece’s campaign alive. The tie will conclude with the mixed doubles, where Coco Gauff is set to partner doubles specialist Christian Harrison against Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari.
