Coco Gauff Reveals the Truth About Not Being Allowed To Take Home the French Open Trophy She Held After Victory

Newly crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff has revealed a little-known fact about the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup — the trophy awarded to the women’s singles champion at the French Open since 1979.

The American tennis star, after her momentous win over No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, has been sharing glimpses into her life through her social media accounts. Recently, she discussed the trophy awarded to the winner of the ladies’ singles title.

Coco Gauff Has Shared an Inside Glimpse of Trophy Presented to French Open Ladies Champion

Coco Gauff recently posted a video on social media to discuss the trophy that she was awarded by the French tennis association.

Gauff pointed out that the trophy hoisted by champions on the day of the final, which they do interviews with, is not the actual trophy that they get to take home.

The American tennis ace then proceeded to show the actual trophy that is given to the winner of the prestigious event.

Coco showed the trophy she had been given, describing it as a “mini replica” of the one she had lifted after clinching the cup.

For reference, she put it beside a bottle of Perrier sparkling mineral water, which appeared to be not much smaller than the cup. Even a cup did not seem much smaller than the trophy.

“But, it is the memories that matter the most,” Coco stressed, adding that it “is very pretty.”

She next put a picture of herself holding the cup against the video foreground of herself clutching the miniature replica.

Coupe Suzanne Lenglen, the trophy awarded to the winner of the women’s singles French Open since 1979, is a replica of an original cup given to French tennis legend Suzanne Lenglen by the city of Nice.

While the replica trophy is presented to the winner each year, the original trophy remains in the championship’s venue.

The original trophy, 40 cm high and 19 cm wide, is made completely of silver.

Similarly, the men’s singles champion receives a much smaller replica of the La Coupe des Mousquetaires.

However, when Rafael Nadal won the 50th anniversary of the Open era French Open title in 2018, he received a slightly larger replica compared to the other French Open replica trophies.

Coco Gauff Has Been Lauded for Her Fighting Spirit After Winning Second Grand Slam Title

Gauff, who was seen as the underdog going into the final against Sabalenka, has been lauded by experts for her fighting spirit in the face of significant challenges.

Her parents, Corey and Candi, stressed that Coco’s fighting ability allowed her to regroup and clinch the final after the setback of dropping a keenly contested first set.

The American, after winning the trophy, wrote an emotional post thanking God and urged people to never give up on their dreams.
