Coco Gauff Opens Up on Playing With Her New Partner

Earlier this month, Gauff’s long-time partner, Jessica Pegula, revealed they parted ways due to their hectic schedules. The former thus brought Montgomery into the mix. At her press conference, Pegula acknowledged that while the two of them are performing well in singles, managing it with doubles could be challenging.

“Coco and I played so much for a couple years there. We did great. A lot of really amazing results and memories. At the same time, doing well in the singles court, we obviously didn’t want to play as much anymore. The schedule just gets really, really tough,” Pegula said.

Gauff and Montgomery started their campaign in Madrid by defeating the fourth-seeded pair of Desirae Krawczyk and Caroline Dolehide 6-3, 6-0. The 2023 US Open champion later shared her thoughts on teaming up with Montgomery on her Instagram story.

“Fun playing with my girl @robinm0nty,” the 21-year-old’s caption read.

Coco Gauff Reaches Madrid Open 3R After Early Scare

Gauff took some time off from the tour after losing 4-6, 4-6 to Poland’s Magda Linette in the fourth round of the Miami Open, thus missing the Charleston Open. She returned to action at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and suffered a 4-6, 3-6 loss to Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals.

The 21-year-old lacked rhythm even at the start of her second-round singles match against Dayana Yastremska in Madrid, being bageled in the opening set. She then won the next two sets 6-2, 7-5 to book her place in the third round of the WTA 1000 event.

Here, Gauff will lock horns with compatriot Ann Li, who booked her spot after beating 25th seed Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The last encounter between the two on the WTA Tour came in Berlin three years back, with Gauff triumphing 6-2, 7-6(2).

Whoever out of the two comes out on top this time, will take on either 16th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or Belinda Bencic in the fourth round of the Madrid Open.
