Coco Gauff’s Mother Asks Her To ‘Forgive Herself Often and Make Mistakes’ in Emotional Birthday Message

Coco Gauff shares emotional reply to her mother, Candi Gauff, on her birthday wishes following the World No. 4's Indian Wells mid-match retirement.

March 13 marks a special day in the Gauff family as it is the birthdate of the World No. 4 and the top-ranked American, Coco Gauff. The two-time Grand Slam Champion is now 22 years old, with 11 WTA titles already under her name.

As she celebrates this special occasion with close ones, her mother, Candi Gauff, took to Instagram to share a couple of beautiful images and a special message to her daughter.

Candi Gauff’s Heartfelt Message to Coco Gauff on Her Birthday

Gauff was born on March 13, 2004, in Boca Raton, Florida, to mother Candi and father Corey Gauff, residents of Delray Beach. She spent her early years in Atlanta, but when she began playing tennis at six, her family moved back to Delray Beach the next year for better training opportunities.

This move ultimately paid off, as Gauff is currently the highest-ranked American, ranked No. 4, with World No. 2 as her best showing.

On her daughter’s special day, Candi took to Instagram to pour her heart out, sharing beautiful images with Coco and a heartfelt message in the caption:

“Happy birthday to my firstborn and FAVORITE daughter! May God continue to guide and order your steps. Keep living, keep going for your goals, allow yourself grace, forgive yourself often, make mistakes, move on from situations that don’t align with your spirit and growth, trust yourself, love, BE, grow, laugh, pause, and most importantly BREATHE!!!”

Apart from these advices, Candi also wrote some motivating words for hard times, writing, “Remember these simple statements… Remember, I will always be your biggest supporter. I LOVE YOU, Always and forever, MOM!”

Coco immediately saw the love and emotions shared by her mother and commented on the post, writing, “thank you mom, I love you.”

However, she did not stop there, as she also shared her mother’s Instagram post in her story, writing, “🥹I love my mom.”

These reactions by the World No. 4 show how much this sweet message from her mother meant to her and how much it touched her. Coco has always been close to her mother, having her during every high and low, providing emotional support after tough losses, and celebrating after massive wins.

Candi left her teaching job to support Coco’s career by homeschooling her and helping her train full-time.

During her pre-tournament press conference at the 2026 Indian Wells, she opened up on her parents’ role in her life after moving out of their house. Gauff described how her father “still does take care of her car,” calling him “very kind” multiple times, while making it clear that her mother does not do her laundry unless she’s “literally sick.”

Gauff’s 2026 season hasn’t been up to the championship level that she is known for so far. She suffered a quarterfinal exit against Elina Svitolina at the Australian Open, a first-round exit against Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the Qatar Open, another defeat at the hands of Svitolina, this time at the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, and a mid-match retirement against Alexandra Eala at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

This marked the second mid-match retirement of her career, her first since the 2022 Cincinnati, and, according to tournament officials, it was due to a left-arm injury. It would be interesting to see how Gauff makes her triumphant return to the WTA Tour and how she regains her dominant form as she prepares for a Grand Slam title defense in two months.
