Coco Gauff To Have a ‘Pretty Good Chance’ Against Iga Świątek at United Cup As Danielle Collins Explains Why

While Team USA edged past Greece in a grueling quarterfinal, Poland dashed the home crowd’s hopes by defeating Australia on Friday, Jan. 9, inside the Ken Rosewall Arena. The victories set up a rematch of last year’s United Cup final, where Team USA emerged victorious.

Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena is set to host this blockbuster showdown, with Taylor Fritz taking on Hubert Hurkacz in the men’s singles and Gauff squaring off with WTA World No. 2 Świątek in the women’s singles.

Recently, American tennis star Collins offered a detailed breakdown of the clash. Currently away from the tour, Collins has been working with Tennis Channel during the United Cup. Collins pointed out that Gauff thrives in a team environment, which could give her an extra edge against the Pole.

“I think it’s tough. I think in these team settings, Coco has so much fun being on the team with all of these players, and the camaraderie. And I think, it just gives her a little extra motivation to really stick it to her. This is the player she wants to beat, she wants to take the win over,” she said.

The former World No. 7 believes Gauff has a strong chance against Iga Świątek but acknowledges the Pole’s current form makes her formidable. She highlights Świątek’s ability to seize momentum and predicts a competitive, high-quality match between the two.

“And I am definitely thinking that Coco has a pretty good chance here against Iga. But with the way, Iga has been playing, I mean, she is dangerous. When she is seeing beach balls and just feeling it, there is not a lot that most people can do. But it’s going to be a good match, so we will see,” she added.

Świątek’s 11–4 head-to-head lead over Gauff might suggest clear dominance, but recent meetings tell a different story. Gauff has claimed three of their last encounters, in the 2024 WTA Finals, 2025 United Cup, and last year’s Madrid Open. This sets up an evenly poised clash, with both players holding a strong chance to prevail, while it remains to be seen whether the team environment could give Gauff a psychological edge over Świątek.
