Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, has weighed in on a crunch decision facing the Golden State Warriors after missing out on LeBron James’s signature.
The former World No. 4 strongly believes that the Warriors should not be giving Draymond Green a new contract worth $28 million per year.

The Warriors were keen to bring James to the Bay Area and team up with Stephen Curry. They were among the four finalists in the race to sign the four-time NBA MVP.
However, the Philadelphia 76ers won the race to sign James and handed Golden State a major blow in its bid to build a roster capable of contending for the championship.
As the Warriors now look to pivot, the next step is figuring out Green’s contract. The 36-year-old declined his $27.7 million player option to sign for less and allow the Warriors to pursue James. However, reports claim that he is now expected to re-sign with the franchise for the same amount.
Gilbert, a veteran sports analyst who also used to coach Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, believes that signing Green to an extension at that price would be the wrong decision for the Warriors. The 64-year-old does not think that Green should get anything more than a veteran minimum contract.
“Throwing money in the gutter, he would not be a starter on any other team in the NBA. Max he should get is one-year veteran minimum and play 15 mins a game off the bench,” he wrote on X.

Gilbert went on to claim that the Warriors should have parted ways with Green three years ago, adding that he would not be a starter for any other team in the NBA.

Green, a four-time NBA champion with the Warriors, remains a polarizing figure among the franchise’s fans. He made 68 appearances last season, averaging 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game while shooting 41.8% from the field.

The 6-foot-6 forward was unable to help lead the Warriors to a spot in the NBA playoffs amid injuries to Curry and Jimmy Butler.
It will be interesting to see what comes next for the Warriors, who could now switch their focus to building for the future rather than trying to win another title with Curry and Green. Gilbert has certainly made it clear that he is opposed to Green getting a big-money extension.
