American WTA star Coco Gauff recently spoke about the personal conversation she had with Aryna Sabalenka following the controversy at the French Open final. The 21-year-old admitted to the fact that players generally tend to make unexpected statements in the heat of the moment. She also mentioned how the Belarusian player made her believe that she fully deserved the victory and the Roland Garros title.
The admission came after Sabalenka publicly apologized to Gauff for the hate she received following the controversial comments.

Soon after receiving backlash from fans for downplaying Gauff’s French Open final win, Sabalenka admitted that she had apologized for her comments.
“I also want to say is that I wrote to Coco afterward—not immediately, but recently. I wanted to apologize and make sure she knew she absolutely deserved to win the tournament and that I respect her. I never intended to attack her. I was super emotional and not very smart at that press conference,” Sabalenka said in Berlin.
Days after the update, the American pro stepped forward to clear the air, mentioning that she has indeed received an apology from the World No.1.
In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Gauff admitted that disappointment sometimes leads to inappropriate choices. She also unveiled part of the text she received from her rival.
“She texted me two or maybe three days ago, she sent a text apologizing. I understand things can get emotional, and things can be said. I definitely appreciate the fact that she reached out because I was a little bit surprised by the whole thing. It’s dirt under a rug and we should all move on,” the 21-year-old said.
During the post-match press conference at Roland Garros, Sabalenka said she lost because she made too many mistakes and suggested Gauff didn’t win because she played better. Many fans thought this was unfair to Gauff and criticized Sabalenka.

The Belarusian later admitted her comments were unprofessional and cited the heavy emotional toll as the reason behind her statement. Gauff accepted the apology and said she understood how emotional big matches can be.
After clinching her second major title, Coco Gauff is now preparing herself to enter the grass swing with a round of 16 showdown against Wand Xinyu in Berlin. The match is scheduled for Thursday, Jun. 19.
Aryna Sabalenka, meanwhile, is the top seed at the event. She started her campaign against Rebeka Masarova on Wednesday. The players’ match was, however, pushed to the next day after the World No. 1 clinched the opening set.
