Coco Gauff delivered a composed comeback win at the Miami Open, but it was her off-court storytelling that stole the show afterward. The world No. 4 fought past Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opening match, then shared a hilarious account of her brother Codey’s booming and “kind of scary” cheers from the stands.
Coco Gauff Reacts to Her Brother’s Intense Sideline Energy at the Miami Open
The 2026 Miami Open marks Gauff’s seventh appearance at her home tournament, where she entered as the No. 4 seed and received a first-round bye. Her second-round clash against Cocciaretto tested her early, as she dropped the opening set 3-6 before regaining control to win 6-4, 6-3.
Playing in front of a home crowd always carries added emotion for Gauff, and that atmosphere is amplified by her family’s presence. Her younger brothers, Codey and Cameron, have become a constant part of her support system.
Speaking in a Tennis Channel segment after the win, Gauff offered a humorous look into what it is like hearing Codey from the stands. “I think my brother Codey is really loud in the crowd,” she said. “I can hear him screaming really loud, and his scream is kind of scary a little bit.”
She then recalled a specific moment that caught her attention mid-match. “One time, I think [Cocciaretto] had an unforced error, and he yelled, ‘Let’s go,’ very loudly. And obviously, I’m not going to tell him that in the match, I’m like, maybe not the right moment. It wasn’t important, but I was like, maybe not the right moment.”
The American star went on to explain the reason behind his approach, linking it to his baseball background.
“But he comes from a baseball background where they’re talking trash while the batter is swinging and stuff. So it’s no real harm, it’s just a different environment for him, for sure,” she added.
Who Are Gauff’s Siblings and What Are Their Individual Pursuits?
Coco’s two younger brothers, Codey and Cameron, have carved out their own unique paths within a family deeply rooted in sports. Codey is the middle sibling and a standout baseball player. A switch-hitting catcher, he has spent years developing his skills with the San Diego Padres Scout Team and the Elite Squad Academy in Florida.
His talent recently culminated in a major milestone. In late 2024, he committed to play Division I baseball for the University of Missouri and officially signed with the Tigers in late 2025 for their 2026 roster.
Meanwhile, Cameron, the youngest of the three, has carved out his own lane creatively. He even contributed to the design inspiration behind Coco’s first New Balance signature performance shoe, the Coco CG1.
Looking ahead, Gauff advanced to the third round, where she will meet compatriot Alycia Parks. This will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour, with Gauff winning their only previous match in the third round of the 2024 Australian Open. The winner of this match will face either Sorana Cîrstea or No. 21 seed Elise Mertens in the fourth round.
