“Having a Grandchild Is Double the Fun,” Evert on Being a Grandmother

While speaking to the press, Evert expressed that nothing compares to the joy of being a mother, but becoming a grandmother brought a different kind of happiness for her as she enjoys watching her son, Nicholas, embrace fatherhood and celebrating the birth of her grandchild, Hayden.

“Nothing beats having a child, but there’s a double sense of joy in the sense that you’re celebrating your son being a father and celebrating this little child,” Evert said. “Yeah, I love my boys. I love my boys. Yeah, that’s been the highlight of my life, yeah.”

The former World No. 1 stated that having Hayden around has been “wonderful,” and she tries to be a “fun” grandmother.

“I’m a grandmother now. My grandchild Hayden is, wow, again, I never everyone kept saying, ‘Wait until you have a grandchild.’ I thought nothing can top having a child. But having a grandchild is double the fun, because you’re also seeing your son being a father. Your child has become a father. Then I have this little grandson. It’s wonderful. I will be, for sure, a fun grandmother. I will right around as long as I can,” she added.

Evert won her last Grand Slam title at the 1986 French Open, where she defeated Martina Navratilova in the final to defend her title, claiming her seventh singles title at Roland Garros and her eighteenth and final Grand Slam singles title overall.
