Casper Ruud’s Take on US Open Mixed Doubles Format

The US Open adopted a revamped mixed doubles format that took place during the fan week, with only 16 teams taking part. Most of these pairs had some of the most well-known singles players in the world and there were not too many doubles specialists.

Ruud and Świątek were asked to give their thoughts on the mixed doubles format, and the Norwegian said that the organizers could invite more doubles players.

Ruud said: “It’s hard to say. I mean, if this format stays, and who knows, brought in other places, it might be. But I think definitely they could look at the players they invite and the players who gets to play.”

“Now it was only three doubles players, I believe, with Christian getting in with Danielle, then you had Sara and Andrea. I understand the frustration of the doubles players not being able to play. I think maybe they could invite some more. Maybe they’ll look at that,” he added.

Ruud also said that the team that won was the one that, in a way, supposed to win, referring to the doubles prowess of Errani and Vavassori.

“When players react strongly at tournaments, they look at it, they take it serious and see what they can do better for next year. All in all, I think it was good that the ones who were in a way supposed to win won,” the Norwegian said.

What Did Iga Świątek Say About the US Open Mixed Doubles Format?

Świątek said that the current mixed doubles format was the only way the singles players could play without any impact on their tournament of focus.

“I think the format is the only way, actually, the singles players could play without it influencing the singles tournament, which obviously we want to avoid. It makes sense,” the Pole said.

Ruud and Świątek will now both focus on the singles tournament, the main draw of which, commences on August 24. Both players lost to the eventual runner-up at last year’s US Open, with the Norwegian losing to Taylor Fritz in the fourth round while the Pole lost to Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals.
