Carlos Alcaraz To Have Temporary Coaching Change During Laver Cup and Early Asian Swing — Reports

Carlos Alcaraz will not have his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, with him during the 2025 Laver Cup and the 2025 Japan Open Tennis Championships.

Fresh off his victory at the 2025 US Open, Carlos Alcaraz briefly returns home in Murcia with his family before jumping right back into competition. He is scheduled to play in two major events, the Laver Cup and the Japan Open, but he will do so without a key figure in his corner. This situation raises questions about how he will navigate the upcoming challenges without his long-time coach.

Why Will Carlos Alcaraz Compete Without His Coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero?

Alcaraz is set to represent Team Europe as they defend their title at the 2025 Laver Cup. However, his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, will reportedly miss the Laver Cup and the subsequent ATP 500 hard-court tournament in Tokyo, the 2025 Japan Open Tennis Championships.

The 2025 Laver Cup will be held from September 19 to September 21, 2025, on an indoor hard court at the Chase Center in San Francisco. This marks the first time the venue, home to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries, will be converted into a tennis arena.

In this event’s eighth edition, Alcaraz will join Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Menšík, and Flavio Cobolli on Team Europe. Captain Yannick Noah and vice-captain Tim Henman will lead the team.

According to a report from Marca, Alcaraz plans to start training for the Laver Cup on Saturday, September 13, 2025, before traveling to San Francisco on Monday, September 15. In Ferrero’s absence, Samuel López will step in as head coach. Alcaraz will accompany his brother and hitting partner, Álvaro Alcaraz, physiotherapist Juanjo Moreno, and agent Albert Molina.

During the 2024 Laver Cup, Team Europe triumphed over Team World, which was looking for its third consecutive title. Alcaraz was a key part of that victory, winning three of his four matches. He was undefeated in his singles matches and won a doubles match with Ruud, though he lost a doubles match while paired with Zverev.

Following the Laver Cup, Alcaraz will travel to Tokyo for the 2025 Japan Open Tennis Championships, which runs from September 24 to September 30, 2025, at the Ariake Coliseum. The ATP 500 event is expected to feature a competitive field, with Rune, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Ruud also anticipated to participate.
