Carlos Alcaraz Salutes Rival Jannik Sinner Following Historic Miami Open Win

Carlos Alcaraz congratulated Jannik Sinner on his historic Miami Open win, which puts Alcaraz's No. 1 ranking in jeopardy.

Carlos Alcaraz congratulated Jannik Sinner after he won the Miami Open to complete the Sunshine Double. The Italian became the eighth man to win both the Miami Open and the BNP Paribas Open back-to-back and the first to do so without dropping a set.

Sinner claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jiří Lehečka in the final on Sunday to claim the Miami Open. He had beaten Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells final earlier this month to clinch his first title at the Southern California event.

Carlos Alcaraz Congratulates Jannik Sinner on Completing the Sunshine Double

After Sinner joined the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi in completing the Sunshine Double, Alcaraz took to Instagram to send his congratulations to his rival.

“Congratulations, Jannik Sinner and team for winning the Sunshine Double,” Alcaraz wrote on his Instagram story.

Alcaraz had a difficult Sunshine Double. The world No. 1 arrived in the United States without a defeat to his name in 2026. But he struggled to reach the top level at Indian Wells and was beaten by Medvedev in straight sets in the semifinals.

At the Miami Open, Alcaraz started his campaign with a straightforward win over Joao Fonseca. But the 2026 Australian Open winner was upset by Sebastian Korda in three sets in the third round.

Both Alcaraz and Sinner will switch their focus to the clay-court swing. They are both expected to start their clay-court season at the Monte-Carlo Masters, which begins this Saturday (April 4).

As the build-up to the French Open gets underway, the battle for the world No. 1 ranking will also be one to watch. Sinner’s triumphs at back-to-back ATP 1000 Masters events have helped him close the gap to Alcaraz at the top of the ATP Rankings.

Alcaraz now has 13,590 ranking points to his name, with Sinner 1,190 points behind with 12,400 ranking points. The two are in a league of their own, with world No. 3 Alexander Zverev at 5,205 points.

With three ATP 1000 Masters events coming up in the lead-up to the French Open, Sinner will have plenty of opportunities to usurp his friend and rival. But Alcaraz boasts a much stronger clay-court record, with 11 titles to his name, compared to Sinner’s 1.

In addition, Sinner has a career record of 65-24 (73% win percentage) on clay. Meanwhile, Alcaraz has an 84% win percentage on the surface heading into the 2026 clay-court season.

The two rivals also contested the 2025 French Open final, where Alcaraz came from two sets down to defeat Sinner 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6.
