Holger Rune has broken his silence after the devastating injury that cut short his 2025 season, admitting in his first interview since the incident that the setback pushed him to confront uncomfortable truths about how he approached his career.
The Danish star said the Achilles rupture that ended his Stockholm Open run became a harsh reminder that raw ability is not enough at the sport’s highest level and that he had been “too easy on things” before the injury forced him to reset.

Rune’s comments come at a pivotal moment in his career. The 22-year-old had entered the Stockholm event as one of the favorites. His semifinal match against France’s Ugo Humbert appeared well within reach when he led 6-4, 2-2, only for the match to flip in a moment. While stretching for a deep forehand, Rune landed awkwardly on his left leg and immediately fell to the court, clutching his lower calf.
He reportedly told the physio he heard a “pop.” His mother, Aneke, later confirmed the worst: a complete rupture of the Achilles tendon that required immediate surgery. Rune spent two weeks recovering in Denmark before returning home to Monte Carlo to begin his rehabilitation.

He added that the demands of reaching the top tier require a fully committed lifestyle, saying, “To become top five and higher, to win Grand Slams, you need to do everything really consistently.”
Rune also reflected on the fluctuations of his early career, noting, “Not all of life is a straight line up to the goal, and the past few years… I think I also needed that phase in my life. To mature at my own pace.”

Although the process came with a cost, he recognized its value. “It for sure cost something with my ranking and in terms of trophies, but maybe it was necessary for me,” he said. “We can’t undo what’s done, and now with the injury, maybe this is the slap in the face I needed to make me take my talent seriously and show myself what I am actually capable of doing. I honestly can’t wait to take myself to another level.”
Rune has spoken multiple times about forming a “new Big Three” with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. In March 2023, he said he hoped the future trio would be himself, Alcaraz, and Sinner.
