Carlos Alcaraz Defeating Jannik Sinner at French Open Final Drew Reactions From Chris Evert, Coco Gauff’s Former Coach, and Tennis World

Alcaraz entered the 2025 French Open as the defending champion, having claimed the title in 2024 by defeating Alexander Zverev in the final. This year, he was seeded second in the tournament and overcame qualifier Giulio Zeppieri, Fábián Marozsán, Damir Džumhur, 13th seed Ben Shelton, 12th seed Tommy Paul, and eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti to reach the final.

In the championship match, Alcaraz faced the top seed, Sinner, and initially struggled, losing the first two sets 4-6, 6-7(4). However, the Spaniard mounted a stunning comeback, winning the last three sets and ultimately clinching the match with a score of 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(10-2). This epic battle lasted five hours and 29 minutes, making it the longest match ever played at the French Open. With this victory, Alcaraz secured his second title at Roland Garros and his fifth Grand Slam title overall.

In the aftermath of what many are calling one of the greatest Grand Slam finals in history, the tennis world expressed its admiration and astonishment. Tennis legend and seven-time French Open singles champion Chris Evert took to social media to express her admiration for the final match between Alcaraz and Sinner, calling it unbelievable.

“I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS MATCH …….” Evert posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The former World No. 1 also praised both players for their exceptional performances and suggested that the trophy should be awarded to both.

“GIVE THE TROPHY TO BOTH OF THEM….👍👏,” Evert added.

Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, remarked that Alcaraz ‘escaped’ with the victory, while Sinner would have to endure the “agony of defeat.”

“that was ultimate in thrill of victory ✌️ for escape from Alcaraz and agony of defeat for Sin City 🌆,” Gilbert posted on X.

Gilbert described Sinner’s loss as one of the “cruelest” he has ever witnessed and expressed his sympathy for the Italian coach, Darren Cahill.

“i am absolutely gutted for my mate @darren_cahill,” Gilbert continued.

“that might be the cruelest beat i’ve ever seen, and there have been some epic 2 sets comebacks in the finals of slams, i need a TO,” Gilbert added.

Alex de Minaur stated that the level of tennis played by Alcaraz and Sinner during the final was insane.

“The level of this whole match was insanity!!!!! What a day to be a fan of this beautiful sport 🙌🙌🙌 ❤️❤️❤️,” De Minaur posted.

Rennae Stubbs likened the match between Alcaraz and Sinner to the battles between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, noting how difficult it was for her to choose sides in such an evenly matched contest.

“These two are so much like watching Roger and Rafa go at it. Hard to root against either of them,” Stubbs posted.

Other prominent figures in the tennis community, including Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, James Blake, and John Millman, also shared their reactions to the 2025 French Open final.

“This match is off the charts. Never seen a final this level. Nobody deserves to lose this,” Blake wrote.

“WOW. What a match,” Ohanian posted.

“How is it even possible that we are watching this type of tennis again, so soon after the greatest ever three battled?” Millman posted.

Looking ahead, Alcaraz and Sinner will kick off their grass court seasons at the 2025 Queen’s Club Championships and the Terra Wortmann Open, respectively.

Alcaraz triumphed over Alex de Minaur in the final of the ATP 500 event in London in 2023. Meanwhile, Sinner secured his title at the ATP 500 event in Germany in 2024, defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the championship match.
