Carlos Alcaraz and Fabio Fognini are playing a thrilling first-round fixture at Wimbledon. However, play at Centre Court was briefly suspended during the match’s fifth set due to an incident in the stands.
Carlos Alcaraz-Fabio Fognini Match Interrupted Due to Illness
Fabio Fognini’s dominant display in the fourth set took the match to a fifth set, and Carlos Alcaraz started brilliantly by taking a 3-0 lead. However, at this point, chair umpire James Keothavong suspended play due to a spectator getting ill. Alcaraz produced a moment of kindness as he took a water bottle and passed it on to the spectator who was unwell.

Play was halted for over 10 minutes and Alcaraz and Fognini were both warming up before the match resumed.
Carlos Alcaraz Beat Fabio Fognini in 5 Sets
Carlos Alcaraz eventually survived a scare in his Wimbledon opener after being pushed by Fabio Fognini. The Spaniard started the match well and took the first set 7-5 before the Italian rallied to take the second set 7-6(5). Alcaraz won the third set to take the lead in the match but Fognini dominated the fourth set to force the match into a decider.
The two-time Wimbledon champion started the fifth set strongly and the suspension did not stop him from producing a superb display and winning 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 to book his place in the second round. It was also his 14th fifth set win at a Grand Slam.
Alcaraz will next take on British qualifier Oliver Tarvet, who is ranked 719th in the world. The 21-year-old won his maiden Grand Slam match by defeating Leandro Riedi 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Alcaraz and Tarvet will lock horns for the very first time, and whoever wins will take either 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime or Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round of Wimbledon 2025.
Elsewhere at the grass-court Major, Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev were the first two among the Top 10 seeds to bite the dust in the opening round.
