Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Left Out of Davis Cup Finals Despite Strong Ranking

The No. 2-ranked Spaniard, Davidovich Fokina, has been left out of Spain’s Davis Cup team for the Final 8 in Bologna. The lineup currently includes Carlos Alcaraz, Jaume Munar, Pedro Martínez, and doubles specialist Marcel Granollers.

Speaking to Marca (translated from Spanish), Davidovich Fokina shared his disappointment and said that he respected captain David Ferrer’s decision.

“It was captain David Ferrer’s decision, and I respect it. Obviously, I would have loved to be on the roster representing my country, but this time he decided to include other players,” said the 26-year-old.

However, Davidovich Fokina also admitted that he was a bit surprised by the decision, especially given his performances and achieving his career-high ranking on tour this season. He said:

“I’m at my highest ranking, number 18 in the world, and I’m the second-highest ranking in Spain. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done with my team this year, especially coming off a difficult year. The selected players are also great, and I’m sure they’ll give their all for Spain.”

When asked if he would join as a fifth player, Fokina’s reply hinted that he found the idea a bit insulting. “Being ranked 18th in the world, I think I deserved to be among the four best players in my country, with all due respect to my teammates, who, as I said, are also great players,” the Spaniard said.

The Spaniard further expressed his desire to perform his best in the remaining season of the year and come back stronger in the next year.

Davidovich Fokina on Missing Davis Cup Qualifiers

Davidovich Fokina had to skip Spain’s Davis Cup qualifier earlier this year to recover from a tough North American hard-court stretch. The World No. 18 retired mid-match at both the Canada and Cincinnati Masters in August due to injury. After a second-round exit at the US Open, he took some time off and didn’t join Spain’s team for their qualifier against Denmark.

However, Fokina made it clear that his absence wasn’t about a lack of commitment. He told Marca: “I missed those qualifiers due to physical problems. I’ve been competing tirelessly this year, and my withdrawals in Toronto and Cincinnati were a warning about my condition. The captain was aware of everything and was in communication with me and my team.”

When asked about when and how he got to know about his snub, Davidovich Fokina replied, “David called me a week ago to tell me he wouldn’t be counting on me for the first squad. Before that call, I had already told him he could count on me. I’ll always be proud to represent Spain, but in the end, it was his decision, and I accepted it.”

Davidovich Fokina is currently competing at the Swiss Indoors in Basel and booked his place in the second round after beating Lorenzo Sonego.
