The 2026 Wimbledon third round is in the books, with several high-profile players exiting over the past two days.
Second seed Elena Rybakina and third seed Iga Świątek headlined a list of players knocked out in the round of 32 at the All England Club. Here’s a look at the major upsets from July 3 and 4 at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.
Wimbledon Third Round Shocks, Featuring Amanda Anisimova and Iga Świątek
Reigning women’s singles champion Świątek was on the receiving end of a shocking defeat against Alexandra Eala on Saturday. The six-time Grand Slam champion’s title defense ended with a 7-6(9), 6-2 loss, extending her 2026 slump.
Świątek narrowly lost a tight first set and failed to match Eala’s intensity and determination in the second. The loss marks her earliest Grand Slam exit since the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
Saturday was also a day to forget for Rybakina, who suffered a 7-6(4), 6-1 loss against Elise Mertens. The World No. 2 started her year by winning the Australian Open, but things have gone downhill for her since.
Last year’s finalist, Amanda Anisimova, was also stunned in the third round, losing to compatriot Madison Keys. The 26th seed delivered a resolute performance against Anisimova, handing her a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 defeat.
Anisimova has endured a difficult year due to injury and saw her run end in a close battle against the 2025 Australian Open champion.
In the men’s singles tournament, Daniil Medvedev suffered a shocking 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 7-5 defeat against Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany. The Russian fell narrowly short, despite holding the advantage at one point in each of the three sets.
Tommy Paul fell to a rejuvenated Hubert Hurkacz in the third round, losing 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, 6-2. In what was a close battle, the Pole used his excellent serve to great effect to secure his spot in the fourth round.
Shintaro Mochizuki pulled off arguably the biggest upset of the round, eliminating 23rd seed Rafael Jódar 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4 to set up a fourth-round clash against Jannik Sinner. The Japanese player, ranked 151st in the ATP rankings, delivered a remarkable performance to claim his biggest career win.

Fellow talented youngster João Fonseca was also beaten in the third round with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 score against Roman Safiullin. The Russian, who took down Andrey Rublev in the first round, will face Novak Djokovic in the fourth round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.
The fourth round begins on Sunday, with Djokovic, Sinner, and Aryna Sabalenka headlining the day’s action.
