Bianca Andreescu’s Heartbreak in Beijing Results in Fear Among Fans About Her ‘Never Returning’ to the Top

Tennis fans recently reacted to Bianca Andreescu's heartbreaking loss to Anna Bondár in the first round of the 2025 China Open.

Tennis fans recently reacted to Bianca Andreescu’s heartbreaking loss in the first round of the 2025 China Open. This was the former World No. 4’s first tournament since she withdrew from her second-round match at the Canadian Open due to a left ankle injury.

Leading up to the China Open, during the North American hard-court swing, Andreescu only competed in Montreal. After withdrawing in Canada because of her injury, she also pulled out of the 2025 Cincinnati Open due to a small stress fracture in her back and subsequently withdrew from the US Open because of the same injury.

How Did the Fans React to Bianca Andreescu Losing at the 2025 China Open 1R?

Andreescu began her run on the Asian swing of the Tour at the 2025 China Open, using a protected ranking to secure her place in the main draw. She faced qualifier Anna Bondár in the first round but lost 4-6, 6-7(4).

Andreescu’s first-round exit in Beijing disappointed many fans, who took to social media to express their thoughts.

One fan noted that Andreescu, who won the US Open in 2019 by defeating Serena Williams in the final, is not the same player she was at the peak of her career. They expressed concern that she might “never return” to the top of the sport.

“If you’re going to have a good year (2019) you might as well smash it – Bianca certainly did that. She’s not the same player these days and I fear she’ll never return,” a fan posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Another fan remarked that while Andreescu had an excellent run in 2019, she has since faced a “tough road” filled with injuries and inconsistent performances.

“Andreescu was excellent in 2019. Its been a tough road since. At least she can play now,” a fan wrote.

“I wonder if Bibi will ever get back to the top echelons. Seems unlikely at this rate… 🙁 #ChinaOpen,” a fan posted.

“Serena was just giving out slams to anyone at the end of her career. Andreescu has struggled with injuries but let’s not act like she hasn’t played at all. She just isn’t that good,” a fan wrote.

“Dang she sure had a tiny window at the top.,,wish she could find her way back…” a fan posted.

Following her victory over Andreescu in the first round of the 2025 China Open, Bondár is set to face 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova in the second round. The two players have faced each other only once on the WTA Tour, during the quarterfinals of the 2022 İstanbul Cup, which the Russian won with a scoreline of 7-6(9), 7-6(3).

The winner of the second round match between Bondár and Kudermetova at the WTA 1000 hard court tournament in Beijing will advance to face either 33rd seed Magda Linette or Marie Bouzková in the third round.
