How Did Bianca Andreescu’s Ankle Injury Force Her Canadian Open Withdrawal?

Andreescu expressed her disappointment regarding withdrawing from the 2025 Canadian Open due to an injury sustained during the tournament. The Canadian previously triumphed at this event in 2019 by overcoming Serena Williams in the final.

Leading up to the WTA 1000 hard court tournament in Montreal, Andreescu competed at the 2025 Hopman Cup, where she and Félix Auger-Aliassime secured the title for their country by overcoming the Italian team of Lucia Bronzetti and Flavio Cobolli in the final.

After being granted a wild card entry into the 2025 Canadian Open, Andreescu began her campaign at the tournament by defeating Barbora Krejčíková in the first round, winning with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. However, during the second set of this match, the former World No. 4 twisted her left ankle at an awkward angle while moving to her right to return a shot.

After taking a medical timeout and having her ankle taped, she completed the match and secured her victory. Andreescu was set to face fourth seed Mirra Andreeva in the second round in Montreal. However, during a press conference held before the match, she announced her decision to withdraw from the tournament.

While speaking to the media, Andreescu revealed that she had suffered a torn ligament in her ankle, which would prevent her from competing in the Canadian Open.

“Sadly, I have to pull out. I have to take the precautions of, yeah, what’s going on. I have a little bit of torn ligaments in my ankle. Yeah, sadly, I won’t be able to play the tournament,” Andreescu said.

Why Are Injury Setbacks So Frustrating for Andreescu and Her Team?

Andreescu, whose career has been plagued by injuries, expressed that dealing with these setbacks has been “tough” for her. She mentioned that she and her team have worked hard to prevent such injuries, but experiencing them remains “frustrating.”

“Yeah, it definitely sucks because this has happened before. Honestly, guys, I don’t have much to say. It’s really frustrating for me and my team, obviously. We’re doing the best that we can to prevent these things, but yeah, it’s tough,” she continued.

When asked about her expected return to the court, Andreescu explained that torn ligaments typically require significant time to heal. However, she hopes to return to competition at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, which is scheduled to take place from Aug. 5 to Aug 18, 2025, at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

“Not necessarily. Taking it day by day, but obviously the ligaments are a little bit torn, so that takes time. So it’s kind of a day-to-day thing. I’m hoping to be ready for Cincinnati, but yeah, we don’t know. Can’t say,” Andreescu added.

Last year, Andreescu received a wild card entry into the Cincinnati Open’s main draw. She faced lucky loser Elina Avanesyan in the first round and lost 4-6, 5-7.
