Bianca Andreescu made a winning return to the court at the National Bank Open in Montreal, but it didn’t come without a scare. The former US Open champion held off Barbora Krejčíková in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening round, but a late-match ankle injury nearly derailed her homecoming.
With the crowd firmly behind her, Andreescu pushed through the final three points despite visible pain and uncertainty about the severity of her injury.

Andreescu, playing on home soil as a wildcard entry, was leading 5-4 in the second set and was just a few points away from closing out the match when disaster nearly struck. As she moved to her right on a return, she twisted her ankle awkwardly. After a medical timeout and with her ankle taped, she returned to finish off the contest.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Andreescu addressed the harrowing moment and the rush of emotions she experienced. “It’s definitely unfortunate what happened,” she said in her post-match press conference. “So, yeah, I just have to wait to see tomorrow morning, basically, what the prognosis is, and then go from there. I’m hoping it’s nothing serious.”
She also acknowledged the crucial role the Montreal crowd played in helping her find the resolve to see the match through. “I was overwhelmed with many different types of emotions,” the 2019 champion said when asked about the moment she returned to the court. “But definitely without them, I don’t know how I would have pushed through like I did.”
“Obviously, I got a little bit lucky. She missed both returns, so that obviously helped. But, yeah, it’s definitely tough for something like this to happen, especially at home. So I’m just, yeah, hoping it’s nothing too serious, and I can play more,” she added.
What’s Next for Andreescu at the National Bank Open
Andreescu advanced to the second round, where she will take on fourth seed Mirra Andreeva. This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour. The winner of this match will take on either the 28th seed, McCartney Kessler, or the victor between Maya Joint and Leylah Fernandez in the third round.
