Head-to-Head History Between Berrettini and Fonseca

These two players have met only once before, and it was Berrettini who won. The meeting took place at the 2024 Davis Cup, and the Italian won 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Fonseca has established himself as one of the most exciting young players on the ATP Tour and looks to be playing with a lot more confidence after an encouraging Sunshine Swing. The Brazilian started his Monte-Carlo campaign by defeating Gabriel Diallo in straight sets before dispatching Arthur Rinderknech 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the second round.

After a retirement in the first round, Berrettini claimed one of the most emphatic wins of his career in the second round as he defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 6-0. The Italian has won six titles on clay and holds a 71-28 win-loss record on the surface.

Match Prediction for Berrettini vs. Fonseca

Berrettini’s experience and clay-court expertise should give him the edge going into this third-round match. The Italian hardly put a foot wrong against Medvedev, winning 73% of the points on his first serve and breaking the Russian’s serve on six occasions.

At 6-foot-5, the high-bouncing clay-court surfaces do not deter Berrettini as much as they deter other players. He also has a highly effective backhand slice that works well on clay. However, he has a poor overall record at Monte Carlo and has never made it past the third round.

Fonseca is also establishing himself as a decent player on clay, already holding one title and a 16-12 win-loss record on the surface. The Brazilian has shown encouraging signs so far in Monte-Carlo, but he now faces a much steeper test against a true clay-court expert.

Despite being taken to three sets in the second round, Fonseca actually delivered a solid performance. He served well and saved 10 break-point opportunities while also putting pressure on his opponent’s serve.

Fonseca will once again have plenty of crowd support on Thursday, but Berrettini arrives in the third round full of confidence after his dominant win over Medvedev. He will also be the fresher of the two after his opponent retired in the first round.
