What Did Ben Shelton Reveal About His Future Goals After Winning His First Masters 1000 Trophy?

After the triumph, Shelton opened up about his ambitions and what this breakthrough means for his career trajectory.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet. I am sure it will in the next couple of days,” the American said. “I am just happy with my performance today, with my level. To be able to fight from a set down and win this match to win this tournament is a pretty special moment for me and my team.”

The victory represented the culmination of relentless preparation and dedication. “We were working really hard everyday, day in and day out, to be competing for big titles like this and play my best tennis during the weekends, and that’s what I did this weekend.”

However, Shelton made it clear that this Masters 1000 title is just the beginning. He revealed that he wishes to compete for Grand Slam titles, which is why there are many areas where he still needs to improve.

“To be where I want to be in the game, which is competing for Grand Slam titles, along with these type of titles, there are a lot of things that I still need to get better at.”

Shelton’s Grand Slam consistency this year shows he’s already knocking on the door of tennis’s biggest stages. The American has reached at least the Round of 16 at each Grand Slam this year, losing to the eventual champion each time. His best Grand Slam result of the year came at the Australian Open, where he made the semifinals.

With success comes new challenges, and Shelton understands that his breakthrough in Canada changes expectations. He admitted that he will now have a bigger target on his back due to his success in Canada.

“When you’re playing well, winning tournaments like this, you have a target on your back. Everyone’s coming after you.”
